Default Lowering Prozac dosage... any advice?

Hi. I've been on 40 mg of Prozac for just about 2 years now. I just received the prescription from the doctor to go down to 20mg. She wants me to take a 40 one day and a 20 the next for about a week so I can get used to the new dosage. Has anyone ever done this before? What can I expect from the lower dose? Any advice for making the transition easier? Thanks. E

I slowly reduced my dose when I was coming off Prozac. I didn't have too many sypmtoms thankfully but I did have a pretty upset stomach at times. I just ate dry toast to help settle my stomach. I hope that everything goes okay for you!!

i did this about 5 months ago and now i am off them completely. all i can say is don't do it too quickly. take your time. i was really spaced out when i first reduced and i was on a much lower dosage than you. if you feel weird at all please go back to your docyor.promise? you may have periods of getting irritable for no reason and perhaps headaches.i feel much better now i am off them. well done on making the decision. good luck! you can pm me if you want to talk about any thing

I would just do what she says, and if it's too much to handle please call your doctor.

If you get nausea gravol can really help.

I hope you can make the transition problem free!

Prozac is easier to taper then the other medications in its class. It has a long half life which means that it stays in your circulation for awhile even if you miss a dose or reduce it. Take your time and follow the doctors taper schedule. You may want to keep a daily journal of your mood and physical symptoms to discuss with the doctor. If you notice things like a dramatic decrease in energy or neurological signs like zapping sensation in the hands or headaches - you might be coming off it to fast. It's too bad he didnt give you a prescription for 10 mg of prozac. You could have stepped down to 30 mg first and then down to 20 mg. Maybe if the 20 mg isn't quite enough he can slow down the taper by giving you 30 mg for awhile. Good luck!

P.S. Here is a google link about tapering prozac and other SSRI's

Bump.

Thanks for the advice... I've begun the tapering process and have read a number of articles to help with that - thanks for the links! So I'm definitely a bit spacy and I've had a headache for a few days now. That said, it's not really too bad. Here's the one question I can't find on any of these related websites, at least not to my satisfaction: I'm STARVING! Could this Prozac-related (or perhaps related to serotonin decrease?) I've drinking tons of water and making healthy choices on snacks etc but I'm not kidding. I'm not casually hungrier.... I'm painfully so. I feel empty all the time, and not in a psychological how do I fit into the universe way but a physical "omigod I need something to eat NOW" way.

Thanks again for any additional advice. E
