Comparing early and late administration of clomiphene citrate for ovulation induction in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
MedWire News: Researchers have found that early administration of clomiphene citrate (CC) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) could improve follicular growth and endometrial thickness, potentially enhancing pregnancy rate.
The team tested a novel protocol for luteal phase administration of CC for ovulation induction in 212 women with PCOS.
In all, 110 women received 100 mg of CC starting the day after finishing 5 days of medroxyprogesterone acetate treatment, while the remaining 102 women received 100 mg CC later on day 3 of menses.
In all, 59.1 percent of women in the early CC group and 51.9 percent of those in the late CC group were ovulating.
Women receiving early CC had significantly more follicles and more follicles of at least 14 mm and 18 mm in size during stimulation than women in the late CC group, at 5.1 versus 2.8, 3.0 versus 1.5, and 2.1 versus 1.3, respectively.
Also, women receiving early CC had significantly thicker endometrium at the time of human chorionic gonadotrophin administration, at 9.1 versus 8.2 mm in women receiving CC later.
The pregnancy rates were 20.9 percent in the early CC group and 15.7 percent in the late CC group, although the difference was not significant, note Ahmed Badawy (Mansoura University Hospitals, Egypt) and colleagues.
