Question Lydia Pinkham

Has anyone ever tried using lydia pinkham? I was using it for about a month last year a few months before I got pregnant. It is a old time remedy the slogan is "a baby in every bottle" I figured if I was not pregnant by May of this year again I would try it again along with the Glucophage XR and a low carb diet.

Just wanted to know if anyone else heard of it or tried it before. I did not think about it untill my husband mentioned it, his mother was the one who recomended it to me. I just was thinking it was the Glucophage along with lossing the 20 pounds by eating less carbs, but now I am thinking maybe the Lydia pinkham had something to do with it also. Is anyone willing to try it again with me?

Lydia Pinkham goes waaaaaaay back... back to the days of patent medicines when a nice dose of alcohol - or laudenum - - or something similar - would pretty much cure whatever ailed you, at least for a little while. I think it was sold as "Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound" and it was largely alcohol.

But not so long ago... less than 2 1/2 years as that's as long as we have lived here and this is where it happened - I saw it in our local Walgreens in a pill form... I glanced at it ... I seem to think it was various herby, natural, alternative TTC/hormone balancing things... not alcohol or anything recreational ...

I *wish* I remembered for sure. I just tried searching drugstore.com and it is not coming up with anything.

It might be worth looking into. I think I am going to look a little harder out of curiosity... I wonder how it compares to FertilityBlend or Ovulex? Those things are EXPENSIVE and IMO at least semi-quacky ... there is some reason to believe they may help but PCOS seems to be the hot new illness and there are so many pricey miracle cures being tossed about out there... it might be interesting to see how Lydia Pinkham's compares. I don't remember exactly what it cost but I know it was less than FB or Ovulex are selling for. There might be something to it... especially if it worked for you before.

eta I found a few things on it... one saying the original was 36% alcohol and the modern contains no black cohash (sp)... and this saying the original was 20% alcohol and the modern still has BC...

http://www.in-gender.com/Sex_Selection/Lydia_Pinkham/

Seems you can buy it on amazon... seems it doesn't have as much stuff in it as the big name fertility aids... definately costs less though.

It does go way back

It's name is Lydia Pinkham: Herbal Supplement, I took the pill form it has iron, calcium and vitamins C and E, and it also has Black Cohosh. It has a lot of other things in it also. I took it for about a month.

I found it at a drug store, not the big ones but like the small family owned drug stores will have them, and I also saw it online.

I just bought some in the tablets at Walgreens yesterday ($9.99). They told me in the store that if they didn't have it in they could order it for me and I assume that would mean I wouldn't have to pay shipping charges. Walgreens.com carries it,too.

I have a friend that recommended it to me. I figured with everything else I have tried... why not? As soon as I said the name to my Mother she gasped and said I know that! My grandmother used to take it and my mom said she has read about it again in several of her health books.

The recommendation I have seen on other sites it to take this from cycle day one until O day. I don't think it has anything in it that would hurt a baby, so I may just take a 1/2 or 1/4 dose after O day to keep it in my system. My cycle is about 33 days long. I never have lost my period but there are some months that I never get a spike in temp to show I ovulated but I usually get E.W. at least one day. Just to let you know where I stand before I start taking this.

I am also about to start taking green tea extract and maca.

Black Cohosh is a dangerous abortifacient...I would be very wary about that if it is still in there. Also I've heard (on here) that green tea can cause birth defects.

Thank you for that information!! I will check on the green tea and I will take the Lydia Pinkham just from day 1 to O day.

I took Lydia Pinkham for less than a month last year and since then I have had regular periods. I got pregnant last year and pregnant again this year. I told my friend to start taking it to help her periods because she has heavy and painful periods.

I found it at my walgreens...it was around $10.59. You really have to look for it because the box is very small...about 5-6 inches high. I found it at the bottom of the vitamin shelf near the vitamins for soy and estrogen replacement. It contains 72 tablets and the directions state to take two tablets with each meal 3 times a day....so the bottle gives you 12 doses....so maybe that's why you only take it until O. The bottle i have says that it's sugar free and contains black cohosh.

I am taking the lydia pinkham, Glucophage XR (2000mg) and a glass of soy (silk)milk in the morning. So we shall see what happens!

I haven't started yet. I should in the next couple of days. I stopped tonight and bought another bottle at walgreen so I would have enough to go all the way through O without having to find another bottle.

Both Walgreens I have found this at only had one bottle in. They did tell me though that they could order it for me and I wouldn't have to pay shipping like I would if I ordered from Walgreens.com.

I am not on any RX just various herbs and vitamins all along. If I am not pregnant by the end of summer/my 30th birthday. DH and I are going to a fertility doctor. My gyn and PCP still don't seem concerned and I am starting to go a little insane. My birthday will be one month short of 2 years that I have been off the pill.

Just an update.... I started taking the LP as soon as I realized that AF was here. This was late Saturday night. I had a fairly light Sun and Mon with cramping only Sat. night through Mid-Sun. AF started tapering off late last night and there was nothing this morning.

This means I went from a full 5 day AF with 2-3 days severe cramping and VERY heavy flow to 2 days light to med flow with 1/2 day cramping!

I took 4 LP's Saturday and 6 Sunday and Monday. I am going to keep up with 6 a day until O day.

Just thought I would let you know that it did make a very noticable, fast difference for me!

I showed my mom the bottle of LP and she was shocked! She didn't realize that LP was still around. She said that her mother-in-law swore by it and took it religiously to help her with her cycles. My mom kept staring at the bottle and said that she was going to get some for my sister (who's been TTC for 8 years)

I told her if this didn't work...I'm trying soy next month....

Diana -I would still keep taking it even if it does not work this month. The only reason I stopped was because I hate taking pills and betwee those all dya and the Glucophage I was taking (4 pills a day) it was to much and a vitamin.
