I see a lot of people are taking magnesium supplements. Has anyone actually gotten their mag checked? I'm leary of taking mag supplements when I don't know what my levels are. Is there a safe limit to take if you don't know your level, kinda like Vitamin D?

I take magnesium because IR can cause magnesium deficiency. I've never had my magnesium measured, but also magnesium helps the body absorb calcium, and my doctor recommended that I take calcium supplements, as it has been shown to help with insulin sensitivity and PCOS, and because I don't eat dairy.

You can take up to 1000mg a day of magnesium without any worry of overdose. If you are taking too much the body usually just gets rid of it, resulting in a stomach upset. Also I have read in the 'The Magnesium Miracle' that the blood test for magnesium is not very accurate as a large quantity of magnesium is used in other body tissues and bone.
I just did an enormous amount of research to figure out how much of each supplement I should be taking and this is what I have written down for Magnesium:
Magnesium - Taken For = Metabolism/Progesterone Production/Sperm Quality, Taken By = Both, RDA = 350mg, UI = 350mg, Suggested Dose = 350mg.
RDA is the recommended daily allowance from supplements, this does not include food. So you can take 350mg of Magnesium and still eat magnesium rich foods and you'll be just fine. The UL (Upper Limit) or UI (Upper Intake) is the most you should safely take in supplement form. You can take more, but you may start to suffer side effects. Side effects for most supplemental overdoses are things like diahrea, cramps, gas, hot flashes, rashes, vomiting and headaches but some are quite dangerous so be careful if you plan to go over the UI. Hope this helps!

For the past several years I have been getting really bad leg cramps at night, and muscle cramps whenever I sweat. My mom tells me to drink gatorade or take an epsom salt bath to get more magnesium when this happens, which seems to work.
I am wondering if my Magnesium might really be chronically low from the PCOS???
I think I might try adding magnesium to see if that alleviates these issues (and shoot, if I lose weight too that's a bonus!)

Magnesium (Mg) is a trace mineral that is known to be required for several hundred different functions in the body. A significant portion of the symptoms of many chronic disorders are identical to symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Studies show many people in the U.S. today do not consume the daily recommended amounts of Mg. A lack of this important nutrient may be a major factor in many common health problems in industrialized countries.

The best way to tell how much magnesium your body needs is by your bm's. TMI!!! If it is diarrhea, then you have taken too much. You need to start slowly, and increase a little bit each week until you have loose BM's, not diarrhea. But increase it a little at a time.
Your body will just get rid of the excess, no problem if you take too much!
I take 600 mg Magnesium Citrate (Natural Calm) daily, and it makes me pretty regular. If i stop the Magnesium, I immedietly have problems going to the bathroom usually!
edited to add..TMI!!!.I have had problems with constipation b4 I started Natural Calm, it really helps this

I'll add to the TMI of this thread. I took 450mg a couple nights ago (gel cap from costco). I had a few abdominal cramps that night... then the next day I had 5 BMs. Everytime I went to the bathroom, I pooped. I think I might lay off the mag. lol
