im trying to quit smoking as of today. my last one was at like 2 or 3 in the mornin. i woke up & was like, ok i need to quit cos i dont care. so today instead of cigs i got a fifty cent bubble machine toy instead.
so anyway i am hoping to be able to stop forever and its killin me. but im also thinking instead of cigs i mite go outside and drink a glass of water while i relax, just like w/ the cigs. or maybe i can get a lollipop. i got gum right now. id rather have a cig but know its best to stop. and i am going to try to wean myself from cokes & sweets as well.
lets hope it works
maybe i can try some deep breathing instead of smoke. cos i know its mostly psychological, my addiction. its nothing more. plus i just moved from tx to pa so its best this way where i will have a different schedule and wont feel as tempted to where u get into the routine of things and then its like OH! I NEED ONE BCUZ IM GONNA TAKE A BATH! or well, we just got home so im havin another, or AFTER my bath or before going out. etc etc
well anyway.........
im tryin to break the habit. im 23, 24 in feb, and ive been on it for about like, 10 years just about...
so send me thoughts about WHY i should quit & the cons of smoking & eating sweets & drinking sodas and the pros of cutting it all out. even tho i know already i just need the idea reinforced. and maybe i will write them down or MAYBE print them out and keep them in a journal so when i feel the urge i can stop myself.
thanks!!!!
Joline

coming from a smoker......I wish you alot of success in your decision to quit smoking. I wish I could quit. I did last March for 12 weeks and one day out of the blue I had a real bad craving so I asked a friend if I could bum one and you can guess the rest from there. What I should have done was keep a pack of nicorette gun or a patch with me. Now I don't know when I will ever be ready to quit again.
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU....keep us posted on how you are doing.
I wish you the best in trying to quit!!
I suggest always keep gum with you, or candies to suck on when ever you feel like craving on just pop one in your mouth. My only suggestion is focusing on quiting the smoking for now, and then once you achieve that, start to cut out your sugar. You need something to reward yourself now with trying to quit. Have you thought of using the patch to help?

Well coming from an ex smoker I can only tell you what helped me. Suckers, mints, corn nuts, anything to keep the mouth busy. And something to keep the hands busy doesn't hurt either!
As for reasons to quit you know how you hear those old ladies hacking up furballs? Well you don't want to sound like that. I know that is always a good detterent for me But really, after the hard part is over you will feel better, and smell better. Also you will have more money. Put it towards something you really enjoy that isn't food related ie, clothes, movies, shoes whatever keeps you going. Also don't be afraid to be *****y. They are going to censor that aren't they Just be as moody and cranky as you need to be. It will pass. I smoked a long time too and it does seem like a big hurtle but you can do this. Just tell yourself that, you deserve a healthier body. You DESERVE to take better care of yourself. YOU CAN DO THIS
Oh, and don't be afraid to come to your cysters for support. That is what we are here for.

Congrats on your quit ! Way to go !
I quit permanantly 4/25/04, and it is sooo worth it.
I smoked from the age of 14 to 28, and I tried to quit many times and many ways before it finally stuck.
The bottom line is that you have to know how addicted you are, and be fully commited to breaking that addiction, meaning that you can't have "just one".
As long as you know that "just one" means oops I am a smoker again, and all my hard work is down the drain now, then you will be being honest with yourself, and you will be much more likely to protect the quit that you have worked so hard for.
I quit cold turkey, and did alot of reading on WhyQuit.com, but the best support network I have found is Quitnet.com, there is always someone there to listen and help you through a craving, or whatever you need. My username there is Mommy76 if you want to read my profile. You can get tons of advice and support to make it easier on yourself which is the best way to quit.
The more reading and research you do, and the more support you have, the more likely you are to secure your standing as a non-smoker.
I don't think you should try to give up sweets at the same time as quitting though. Smoking is much more lethal than a few extra pounds, so focus your attention on the quit, and wait at least one month post quit to begin the diet restrictions. A good diet to try is The Fat Smash diet( I am doing it now and could'nt have while I ws quitting smoking) that begins with a 9 day detox that will flush your system of all that processed garbage we call food, and then transition you slowly back into an unrestricted diet that you can control yourself. But my advice is to wait on that until you get a firm hold on your quit.
Please let me know if you need any advice or ideas,I am happy to help.
Best wishes !!!
Good for you! I applaud you for deciding to stop & for recognizing how habitual it is. My mom stopped after 35 years of smoking so remember that it can be done. It is great that you are so committed to quitting & I wish you the best of luck. There is no denying the awful health effects of smoking - not only for you but for everyone you smoke around. And just think, soon the smokers around you will be saying...
"Well, Joline quit & she's doing great so maybe I can to!"
As for the sweets, I was a hardcore soda drinker & chocolate addict for years. After being diagnosed with PCOS I was really determined to see how much of what I was feeling was really being caused by the PCOS & how much of it was my lifestyle. I started eating healthy things that I like & started getting more exercise through activities that I really enjoy. I am feeling much better now & feel like I have better control over my life. I still struggle to order water over soda at a restaurant but I just have to remind myself of my goals. Cutting sugar out of my diet was the best thing I ever did & I don't really get chocolate cravings anymore either... I still can't believe that one! You will not regret doing this for yourself & it really doesn't have to be that hard. Find healthy things that you enjoy, owe it to yourself to stick to your goals, & you will do great. I'm cheering for you!

i couldnt do it. two days, thats all i lasted. but thanks for the support guys!!!!!
man i just moved up here to PA away from all my family & stuff and some reason when i think of not having one, i get real upset. cos im like, oh im gonna get some cigarettes and then when i CANT cos its too late (i have to get my bf to take me so i can wait it out) but if i think im not going to get any or i havent had one like at my attempt to quit, im just like...very homesick all of a sudden! out of the blue! strange. its like a moody feeling but i get that if im away from sweets for too long. i dont smoke a lot as it is but one of these days im going to give it up if i can and im sure there will be many attempts before im successful. we dont have a lot of money right now and i hate using my bf's money (i have SOME money but then when hes working and im not its gonna be HELL!!!!!! cos im gonna be like a big mooch but i smoke about 2 packs a week) ANYWAY none of my family in texas knows i smoke. strange huh? anyway
i wont give up! im sure i'll have another bout again where i try to quit ....
thanks again for the support !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

congratulations!!!!!!!!!!! you lasted 2 days, that's awesome. the blues that you are feeling that could be from quiting. you can do it...... don't give up. you wanted a list of reasons why...... here you go my family who couldn't give up cigs may they rest in peace: paw paw lyons, granny lyons (2nd hand smoke), aunt jeanette, grand ma lily, aunt odessa aunt florence aunt mayola, aunt madonna, paw paw hilliard, cousin sonya . survivors of cancer or: uncle bozo (dad's bro), uncle hilliard (lyon's son), uncle byron (lyon's son), paw paw anthony (passed from related problems caused by cancer) i hope this encourages you to live a healthier lifestyle. i will always be here to help support you and encourage you.
oh wow. This is a difficult topic.
Glad to hear that you quit for two days, that's a start.
Maybe next time it will be two weeks......
I'm right there with you, it is a horrible, deadly addicition.
I have been smoking for over 6 years, and in Nov., it will be 7, if I continue. I went to smoking cessation classes last year, it helped for 5 days, started up again last week, it is a tough thing to do, especially when we have so much else on our plate.
everyday i s a small step, i smoked for 14 yrs it took me seeing our cancer tree (similar to a fam tree but for cancer relatives) for me to quit. i quit 2 days before i found out i was pg. rome wasn't built in a day - you can do great great things a step at a time. don't be hard on yourself you can do it everyone back slides. you can all do it.
Good for you for trying! I've never smoked, so I can't tell you how to quit, but I can tell you that your life will be a lot longer and happier if you do. We recently buried my grandfather who died slowly of, no kidding, seven different smoking related cancers. He did live to be 73 which sounds great until you consider that the people in his family routinely live to be a healthy 100. I won't go into the gory details, but that is not how you want to die.
Have you considered a support group, nicotine gum, etc? There are so many things out there that can help -- I hope you find the right one for you!
