First of all I just have to say I wish my man was as concerned and willing to help as you, your g-friend is soooo lucky to have you!
2ndly I have to agree with duramater, DCI is the BOMB!!! I personally call my DCI my "magic pills". It only took 2-3 days of taking it for me to notice a difference in my skin, only one day to notice a difference in my appetite , and a few days to notice a difference in my energy level and mood. I personally haven't lost weight but some Cysters have reported weight loss with it. Just check out the short video (3 1/2 min) on chiralbalance.com's home page it explains it really well. Just supplementing a natural metabolite that our lovely PCOS bodies get rid of way faster than normal and make less of.
Met never helped me not even at 2000mg/day, just made me sick, I took it religiously for 4+ yrs because Dr told me it would/was helping. But DCI...LOVE IT!!! My insulin dropped from 43.7 to 10.5 with in 5 weeks...LOVE IT!!!

i have a question if someone doesnt mind answering. my gf's mother has got "bi-polar" depression and diabetes but has never been diagnosed for pcos. she's also had a miscarriage. is it possible that my gf's mother also has pcos and that her depression is just a result of her condition as opposed to actually being bipolar?
if so, would it be possible if i told my gf to share her B-vit and fish oil pills with her mother that it may actually make a difference with her moods?
About your gf's mom...That makes a lot of sense to me. Couldn't hurt trying.
As far as the DCI. No prescription needed it's a supplement, technically in the B vit family but really it's a metabolite meaning your body is supposed to metabolise other things to make it. But PCOS bodies for some reason don't, or not very well anyway. And they also excrete it too fast, I've heard up to 6x faster than normal. What it does is sensitizes your cells to insulin, if our (PCOS Cysters) body doesn't sense there is enough insulin it produces way too much, then the elevated insulin causes our androgen (testosterone) levels to rise which in your gf's case is probably what's causing the acne. The weight gain could also be caused by IR because if the body doesn't sense the insulin it can't use it, therefore a lot of the food eaten will be turned to fat because of the inability to burn the calories. Does that make sense?

For somepeople it works okay. Wouldn't hurt to try. I just have way better luck with DCI myself. But using them together actually seems to work the best for me. Everyone's body is different though and going to respond to things differently. It may take a little bit for her to find what works the best for her, just help her hang in there it can get soooo frustrating.

I think it is wonderful that you care so much about your girfriend. Maybe ask if you can go to the doctor with her. Really the doctor will know if supplements will be ok with the other meds she is taking. BCP regulates her hormones, if she has high testosterone. That's what I know about bcps. The supplements I don't think will work in that area. Help her advocate for herself. She has to tell the doctor all her concerns and if that doctor won't listen then maybe another one will. Met didn'thelp my weight but it has helped my testosterone and insulin. I can't take bcps. Reading this site I have found that there are many ways to treat PCOS. But I think the best way to help her is just love her and accept her (like youdo). PCOS does a number on ya. But I would listen to her doctor.

I say go the way she feels is right for her. Dr's have never been able to prescribe me anything to help as well DCI has. A lot of Cysters find Drs can help them. In my case...I've done a TON better with the supplements I have researched and am taking.

I would go with the Inositol! I used to take it a few years ago and it was great... My acne went away in just a matter of weeks and my weight flew off. My mood swings were totally non-existent and I am a lot like your girlfriend with my moods. And my mom is bipolar and overweight. She also had a miscarriage when I was younger and took a long time conceiving my brother (we are nine years apart). She was also diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. She could very well have PCOS. I never thought to introduce her to the supplement, but I will now because I take it again myself along with my Metformin. I bought mine from GNC. I bought only the regular kind, not the DCI. I take 2 tabs a day (1000mg) right now because I'm on the Metformin (1500mg daily). But when I took the inositol alone I took up to 2000mg per day (four 500mg tabs). At GNC the 100 count of 500mg tabs only costs $10.49. Also I eat grapefruits which contain lots of Inositol as well as cantaloupes. I drink unsweetened grapefruit juice with each meal.
I'm giving my brother a bottle of Inositol and a GNC gift card for his birthday. What people don't realize is that men who have PCOS in their families actually have the symptoms too. I read up on it in my PCOS book, "PCOS: The Hidden Epidemic" by Thatcher. My brother has some serious mood swings kind of like the testosterone rages someone gets from steroids. He also is excessively hairy... he has hair evn on his back... LOL He suffers from acne as I did and gets it on his chest and back as well. It's hard for him to lose weight no matter how much exercise he does or dieting and he is starting to have a receding hairline (male pattern baldness)... he's only 24 and my father has a full head of hair! I showed him the PCOS book so he knows that he is experiencing it, so now I am giving him the Inositol and I hope he takes it to help him out, because we all can sure use the break from his moods! I will now give some to my mom as well hoping it will help her.
I hope this helps your girlfriend as well, but I am sure it will. BTW, having a miscarriage can be very depressing. I myself had 2. It takes a long time to get over it. Especially when you see children walking around with their parents. And try not to say, "make her go to the gym." You don't want to seem forceful. Especially with so many PCOS patients, going to the gym feels like wasted effort because the pounds don't roll off like everyone else's. It does become frustrating. But using the Inositol combined with the exercise should definitely boost her mood and melt off the weight. Good luck!

BCP can actually help control weight issues when you have PCOS. They can be really helpful to control the out-of-control hormones, like Testosterone. Normally I only hear women who dont have PCOS complaining about BCP making them gain weight. Also, if youre not TTC my doctors have recommended Yasmin as the best BCP because it helps with testosterone. (I got put on the generic this last time and swear it is NOT the same so I am going back to name brand). Also, my endocrinologist recently told me that it is extremely difficult for women with PCOS and Metabolic Syndrome to lose weight. It sounds like she doesnt have a lot that she needs to lose, and I dont either (maybe 10-15) and I think heavier women might have better success. Also, IR causes weight gain around the midsection and my doctors have convinced me it might be something you just have to live with. Now like I am said I am not that worried about losing weight, I might be more determined if I had more to lose. Another diet that most people always say is terrible but my endo recomended it is the Atkins diet. It isnt healthy to stay on for long, but it will help with weight loss for those with Metabolic Syndrome. My doctor told me that I would basically have to cut out ALL carbs to lose any weight. Which of course isnt completely healthy, I know that, and Im not trying to diet anyway. Good Luck with your girlfriend. Please try to be understanding with her. It is a mental battle as well as a physical battle.

she went to see a doctor 2 weeks ago who completely disregarded her pcos symptoms and tried to put her on accutane for her acne. then she saw another doctor who told her she needs to come off the pill for 1 month so that they can do a pcos and insulin resistance test on her. she is currently on dianette, but the doc told her he is gonna put her on another pill which is regarded as safer in the long run (dont know which one that is).
im gonna hold off on giving her the inositol for now until she gets her test results back, so that we know exactly what we are dealing with.
i havent seen her in a few weeks so i dont know exactly how the other supplements are helping her.
my gf went to see her GP who told her that dianette is probably not the best option for long term use. he told her that she should come off the pill for one month so she can have a proper PCOS and IR test. he also told her that he will put her on a BCP called yasmin??? (any info on that would be great), as a replacement for dianette.
my gf told me that she is too concerned about coming off the pill for a month because she doesnt want the acne to return so shes just gonna ask the doc to put her on yasmin.
i've given her all the information and i can only really support her decision in this even though i feel she should make a short term sacrifice for a long term gain.
i have told her to start taking the inositol because of her decision and i will try order some DCI from australia to let her test it out.
