Question Meal replacement therapy???

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had used meal replacement therapy to lose weight?

I have been advised by the fertility nurse at my local hospital to discuss it with my GP, as I am not currently responding to clomid & they think that I will respond if I lose some more weight (at least 2 stone).

I have tried Slimfast before, but this is supposed to be much lower in carbs & doesn't include any meals - just food drinks. Also, it is only available on prescription.

Any info would be appreciated.

Ta very much, Kirstie

Hello

I tried Slim Fast last summer - and PUT ON 10 pounds in 2 weeks. So, I obviously stopped taking it!!

Don't know about a prescription only one though. Could be something else.

Hope I've helped

Hi!
I'm using the Slim Fast and I've lost 30 pounds in 3 months. But I haven't heard about Slim Fast on prescription

Eva, I had a similar experience with Slimfast & had since been told that it is because I am severely IR & slimfast is very high in carbs . Maybe it would be different now that I am taking met.

Angela, well done on your weight loss - thats a fantastic amount to lose! This stuff is not the same as Slimfast - it is completely different & you don't eat anything else at all - there is no evening meal, just the meal replacement drinks.

Whilst you are doing slimfast, are you just using the shakes, or do you have the soups as well? Is it working out to be very expensive? Maybe if my GP isn't happy to prescribe this other stuff, I will try it again.

Thanks for your help,

Kirstie

Kirstie,
I tried everything from the SLim Fast range. It worked for me and I'm using everything to have varietes every day. I'm using the shakes, soups, hot chocolate and sometimes for dinner I have the meal replacement chocolates..these are yummy.
About the price,it's not that expensive as it appears. A little tip. If you have the shops from the Sell for less range-just shop from there. In Tesco, the soups are 3.99 for 3 soups but from Sell for less I bought a whole bunch this weekend for only 1.99 for 3 soups. That's a bargain.
You might give it a try. I feel full after the SF and I don't have chocolate cravings..and...if you have SF for breakfast and lunch, that's only 400 calories. So you can have dinner for only 600 calories and you see, you've cut down the calories by half. Now I sound like a Slim Fast spokeswoman
Maybe somebody is not going to agree with me but it worked for me.
If you have more questions or you need a buddy for support feel free to email me anytime

Love
Angela

My docotr has told me he wants me to lose weight before I go onto Metaformin, just to see if I can lose the weight myself because I wasn't really trying before.

It sounds trite but I don't drink milk or full fat butter and cut out the oils and butter's while cooking. This has helped a little and I am just changing my diet gradually rather then go on a full out diet at the moment.

Losing two stome too quickly might hurt you and it will come back in some way. Are you going to a dietician yet?

email me if you wanna talk.

No,I'm not going to dietician.
I actually thought that my weight loss was normal
Maybe I"m wrong. Anyway I read in the SF plan that the healthy way of losing weight is pound per week so that's how much I lost. And I used to workout 5 times a week,I walked everywhere. Thank God I haven't gained a pound since then.
What diet are you on?

Sorry Angela (hugs). I didn't mean you weight lose is too quick. Well done for losing so much!

What I was trying to say was that Kirstie should be carefull about loseing two stone too quickly. I have done it before and it just came back after a couple of months.

The diet I ammon at the moment is the 'don't eat chocolate or too much dairy diet'. It sounds silly but I was drinking two pints of milk a day and eating lots of chocolate. So until my next appointment with my dietcian (when I will have a full diet plan drawn up) I am trying to cut stuff out of my diet gradually.

I would love to go on slim fast but I appear to be allergic to it! I am allergic to peanuts so that might be it!

Good luck with the weight loss!

I'm a bit confused about the 2 different types of SlimFast that seem to be mentioned.... but I'll just say that the range from popular one (on TV adverts and stuff) is on 3 for 2 sale at Sainsbury's at the moment!

Pinkflutterby,

I know what you are trying to say & appreciate your concern.

However, I have six months to lose this weight & the nurse at the hospital told me to aim for 1-2 pounds per week. Two stone is 28 pounds & six months is 26 weeks, so I don't really think that is too quick, its more what it should be, but I can assure you, I am not in too much of a hurry to lose a huge amount of weight - I may have put three stone on in three months, when I came off the pill, but I have been carrying that three stone (plus another one) for nearly five years now, so I don't expect it to disappear over night (although waking up tomorrow morning with a figure like Marilyn Monroe's would be pretty cool ). Right now, I feel like I look more like a sumo wrestler!

I am not seeing a dietiacian - my Mum is one, & I have tried everything that she has suggested over the past few years, but none of it has worked so far. Now she is recommending that I start a very low carb diet, but I am a veggie so it is too difficult for me to stick to.

Dani UK,
I am not too sure what you mean by the two types of slimfast, but am assuming you mean meal replacement therapy & slimfast - please correct me if I am wrong.
With meal replacement therapy, you get it on prescription from your GP, you have three liquid meals per day @ around 800 calories total, but you don't eat anything else. It sounds very difficult to stick to & not very healthy, to me. Slimfast is as you have seen it advertised & is much less restrictive because you have two shakes, one meal & three snacks a day, adding up to 1200-1400 calories per day. Sounds much easier to stick to!

thanks for all the replys,
Kirstie
