if you are talking about metformin it means (for me) if i drink while taking this med i get violently ill, i can stop taking it for a couple days and i still get sick, so therefore i take my medicine and i dont drink, as for other meds, there can be adverse effects that can be very harmful, sio if it says dont drink there is probably a reason, you may want to try looking up the info on that specific drug to see if has a bad reaction with alcohol, until then stay away from it.

As the previous poster said, it depends on the medication. But usually if it says don't drink alcohol, you shouldn't drink alcohol.
With Metformin you can get really sick. With psych meds it can put you to sleep or majorly impair your ability to function normally.
With Metformin I could have a couple of drinks if I didn't take a pill 24 hours before or after I wanted to drink. less then 24 hours and I would puke and get the runs and pretty much wish I could just die.
It was easier to just not drink.
Be VERY CAREFUL if you decide to drink while taking a medication that has drinking warnings. Make sure you tell some one you can trust to remember what medication it is, and to keep an eye on you as you may not act like yourself if you have a bad reaction. A lot of drugs intensify the effects of alcohol. For example, some pysch drugs like xanax or paxil can make you feel drunk after a single beer when normally you could drink 3 or 4 before you would even get a buzz.
Again...better to just avoid alcohol if you possibly can. Become the DD and make sure your drinking friends get home safely
