I am rather new on here myself so I am sure there are lots more people who can answer this better than myself. I've had PCOS for the last 13 or so years and find the doctors over here in the UK aren't anything like the doctors in the states. I'm on metformin but that is it. Everytime I go to my specialist here in the UK he just shakes it off and tells me no pill will actually work for me. I've read most people are on a dosage of metformin of about 1500mg. I've been on 1000mg for the last 4 years and the doctor says there is no need as the 1000mg is the recommended dose. I find it incredibly frustrating!! I've been on it for 4 years and still haven't had a cycle.

Hi Lilly

Welcome!

I think you'll find lots of information on this site about what possibilities there are for you. There are lots of medications available in the UK and lots of really good help too. The key if finding a doctor who understands PCOS.

My first daughter was conceived after I lost four stone and was taking metformin. My second daughter was conceived with clomid which stimulates ovulation. I'm pregnant now and that was totally spontaneous - no meds at all.

Good luck to you and if you have questions just post them here - we're a helpful lot!

Paddy

Hi Paddy,
Can I just ask... with your first child was the only thing you did was take the metformin and lose weight? Did you then begin to ovulate on your own or did you need further help?

I was in the gym probably 4 or 5 times a week, so lots of exercise. I lost the weight with a low carb, low fat diet. I had absent periods when I began taking 1000mg of metformin and within 3 weeks I had a period. I started ovulating and was pregnant after nine months. I really think the type of diet did the trick.

With my second pregnancy though the above didn't work and I needed clomid.

Thanks Paddy! Stories like this help me feel better. I've started up the low carb diet too and have lost 3 lbs in a week and a half. But does it suck!! I'm such a lover of breads, pastas, etc. The plus side is that we eat out less often because there aren't many places you can go that doesn't have carbs involved. At home I can dictate my diet better. Last christmas time I had lost about a stone and a half but put it back on throughout this year. I want to try really hard. We even bought a Wii so my husband and I can "workout" together. How long did it take you to lose the weight? Hope you don't mind me asking. It's just reassuring sometimes to know others have been through it and can do it.

treblecleff- if you don't mind me asking are you overweight?? I am a thin cyster and my gynae told me that 1000mg of metformin was the max I could take but if I was overweight I could take more. Where in the UK do you live?? Maybe another cyster could suggest a specialist for you?? Has your GP refered you to your local fertility clinic for tests and treatment??? Also have you looked on the verity website and discussion board its more UK based and could help you find the right treatment.

No problem. I lost the weight quite quickly - over about 3 months. I got into the swing of the diet after a while - lots of salads when out. After about 4 months I started reintroducing carbs slowly - adding some brown rice, brown bread and brown pasta.

its probably best asking your doctor if they are available in the uk. Some american medications have a different name in the uk. Thats why i like asking questions from other board members because even tho we all have pcos everyone has a different story and probably different treatment. What i have run into is that some of there meds are not authorized for use for pcos in the uk on the nhs. Someone else might have had better luck with their doctor. So the more questions we ask and the more people are willing to share hopefully the more knowledgeable we can become.

Unhappy Rather Long But Please Read!!

let me tell you exactly what has happened...
In June I was experiencing EXCRUTIATING pain in my stomach for about 2 weeks so i went to the doctors and he arranged an ultrasound scan for me which I had and I also had an internal scan... and then I heard nothing.

YESTERDAY I phoned my doctors surgery and asked about the results and the receptionist put the doctor on the phone.
He said my left ovary has cysts and my right ovary SEEMED fine but the images they got werent great but they did seem fine.

I said "well thats not what you want to hear when your trying for a baby"

He said " oh well what you gonna do?"

I said " Well how does it affect getting pregnant? what happens from here? is it going to cause me trouble?"

He said " ye it will make it a little harder to get pregnant but you can still get pregnant... what happens from here? nothing really and what trouble did you have in mind?"

I explained that my sister in law has the same condition and she had an operation 18 months ago to remove a cyst but it has come back during her pregnancy (she is 6 months) and after the pregnancy she is having her ovary removed....

He told me having the ovary removed would make it a lot harder to get pregnant which I thought was a no brainer. He didn't tell me about ANY form of medication AT all.... at that point he said "ok bye" and put the phone down. So I have been left in the dark. I have read on a lot of websites about the medications but none of them say whether they are available in the UK and how long you have to have been trying before they will put you on it.

My doctor is USELESS. I asked him for a blood pregnancy test before he arranged the scan and he hadn't even heard of them!!
SO now you know my full situation... tell me what to do... what to ask... I need someone to put my mind at rest

I know that clomid is quite effective or metformin. My friend was diagnosed with PCOS in July after not having a period for nearly a yr and she got prescribed metformin and she had a period in October. I think Clomid and Metformin are the main 2 meds for this condition in this country but I am no expert so don't quote me on it. I think a lot of it comes down to diet and excercise too. The GI diet is really good for PCOS as it controls your insulin levels better. I've also heard that acupuncture works well (this helped another one of my friends, she had no periods then had acupuncture and her periods were every 5 wks then she fell preg). Hope this helps
