Default medicine for excess hair?

just wondering if there are any medicines that help with excessive hair growth. im going to be going on birth control soon and was hoping there might be a birth control pill that also lowers the excessive hair growth because im very self consious about it. thanks!

I'm on Diane-35 primarily for contraception but its definately helped my acne and facial hair growth. I noticed when I changed to Monofeme for 3 months that my 'sideburns' were the first thing to come back, followed by the acne.

Yasmin has a small amount of spironolactone in it which is a medication that many women here take to reduce hair growth. Spiro is an androgen blocker and it binds testosterone at the root of the hair so no new hair sprouts up. It won't do anything for the hair you already have but it should prevent any future growth. It takes about 9-12 months to work. Now the Yasmin BCP contains a very small dose of spiro-like 25 mg. It may or may not be enough for you, depending on how bad your hair growth is. I'm on 150 mg so that tells you something! That's something to discuss with your doctor though. Hope this helps.

My endo told me I would see results with spiro in 6 weeks. It's been about 8, and I do think I'm seeing results. Maybe it's just because I'm looking for them, though...but I do shave considerably less!

Anyway, there are a lot of different medications and it's up to you and your doctor to decide which, if any, you need. BCPs help many women, as do spironolactone and metformin. There's also been some threads recently about the helpful effects of spearmint tea. Your endo may have more ideas.

That's the problem -- the underlying male-type hair growth is only being suppressed temporarily, as long as one is on the medications. As far as the male-type hair growth alone is concerned, I feel that shaving is a more straightforward answer, though for dealing with problems like fertility issues, meds may be essential (and may have some effect on the hair issues as a fringe benefit.

Do you see an endo or just your gyno? An endo is really going to be more help in this area than a gyno will be. Also, not seeing your doctor in years sounds like a problem in and of itself.

Yep I would see a different doctor. You deserve to get the treatment you need. There are anti-androgens you can take, and they really do work!
