1) is progesterone the same as provera?
2) i had no idea that even if you aren't getting af you can still ovulate?
3) (really stupid) but how the heck can you tell that you are ovulating without some kind of testing?
4) progesterone is primarily for inducing af?
5) I always gain at least 5lbs when taking it....I presume its water?
I take 10mg for 10 days 4x a year
It was kind of funny today at work...I was telling a friend/coworker how ill I get when I take the mprogesterone and she said, well you aren't having kids so why not just have a hysterectomy (sp?) then you don't have to bother about it. Yeah I'm 35 but I havn't quite given up hope....yet.
Thanks everyone

I did a search one day on the net and medroxyprogesterone came up as provera. So, I was really confused too. Good luck! Sorry I can't help any.

I'm supposed to take it for 7 days & then stop to start AF. I started it last night and feel gross today - all bloated and tired and just not right. But I hear that's fairly normal.
What I'm wondering is what if this doesn't start AF? All my gyn said was to let him know if it didn't, but he didn't say what that meant or what he'd do if it didn't. Anyone know? |

My Mood: Points: 29,242.61 Bank: 25,362.03 Total Points: 54,604.65 | progesterone Medroxyprogesterone is a form of provera, and as been known to cause fluid retention, among other things. BCP contain provera. Provera is a progestIN.
Prometrium and creams are progestERONE, which has a different chemical structure than the synthetic progestin, and binds to hormone receptors differently.
I gain ~4 lb (about 3% of my weight) waiting for AF. When my progesterone cream gets discontinued and estrogen drops to bring on AF, I lose the weight. *knock on wood*
Progesterone or provera are typically given, I was told, to counter the estrogen already there. Too much estrogen all by itself tends to cause problems. Converting to testosterone. Overprducing the uterine lining--which without progest* of some sort to come along, and then get withdrawn (simulating hormones of ovulation), the lining won't shed. When the lining never sheds, it's bad news and can lead to endometrosis and sometimes the big C.
So yes, it's to bring on AF, but underlying that is to balance estrogen.
Your lining sounds like it had been built up for a while probably and that's why it's so heavy now. Without progestrone cream, AF was superheavy for me. Like 13 days!

Points: 6,269.57 Bank: 1,132.06 Total Points: 7,401.64 | is this supposed to happen? I just took the last of 7 days of provera & overall, haven't felt too bad. I am puffed up pretty significantly - my pants are all a little snug - and my moods are swinging like crazy, but that's about it.
This evening though, I accidentally kicked something & cut my little toe - just a short, shallow scratch. A scratch that small shouldn't have bled like this one did (I got blood on my mother's carpet and all over the toe next to it), so I'm wondering if that might have something to do with the provera. Anybody know?

Points: 6,269.57 Bank: 1,132.06 Total Points: 7,401.64 | AF has arrived 3 days after stopping the provera (10 mg/7days) and it's a more slow start than when I'd have af without. I'm in agony though - not cramps like I'm used to, but it feels like my right ovary is being pulled, twisted and squeezed - often at the same time. I know heavier flow is normal, but is this pain?
Oh, and since I started taking provera, my gums bleed when I brush my teeth - anyone know what that's about?

As for the gums -that's an interesting thought. I had swollen gums the last time I had AF induced by provera. Wondering if there is a correlation. |

I prefer to take prometrium now to induce periods. I do get moody on both though.

Points: 6,269.57 Bank: 1,132.06 Total Points: 7,401.64 | doesn't it figure? Well, in the first 10 minutes of my last block class, AF started in earnest! I felt so crappy, that I sat down for the first time all day while the kids were doing an activity - wouldn't you know the principal walked in to observe my teaching. He has a major thing about teachers sitting during instructional time. Anyway, I eased my way out of my chair and, feeling like death on a cracker, started reviewing the exercise. Now, I can't very well explain to him that I was sitting down because I was gushing. . . Oh well, the joys of being female.
The up-side is that since the AF picked up, the pain has lessened. It's not gone, but it's better. Just know I don't ever wanna have to take this crap again.
