Default meds for oily skin, hairloss and excess hair??

Hi everybody,

My main symptoms are: oily skin and acne, hairloss and excess hair. After using Diane 35 several years the doc put me on Proscar (sort of chemical Saw Palmetto ) and Provera. Proscar was working quite well for the hairloss, I mean I stopped shedding but I don't think the lost hairs are growing back. However, this med doesn't seem to be working for my oily skin. The Provera was just poison to me, bloated belly, sore breasts, severe moodswings. Asked doc about Prometrium but he said if i couldn't stand Provera chances are that Prometrium wasn't going to suit me either. Instead he prescribed the light bcp Mercilon (just to have a period). Now my questions for u are:

- Would u agree with the Mercilon decision?
- I hear that Saw Palmetto is much more effective than Proscar. I can't seem to find it here in Belgium ( doc's never heard of it). Which brand do u use? What does the label say (so I know for sure I order the right one)? Are u happy with SP (can I expect miracles)?
- Do u have other remedies against my symptoms? What about Vitex or evening primrose?

Thank you so very much. I wouldn't know what to do without this site and all of u lovely ladies ( makes u wonder how desperate pcos cysters were in de pre-internet days, eh)

Love and hugs,

Charlie

Default The Cause

Read Kat's post on Flax seed oil and Saw Palmetto. You most likely want to address the cause of the unwanted hair and loss of head hair...excess testosterone.

Just my thoughts.

Provera is an artificial progesterone that is like the progestin component of birth control pills. It does not work the same in your body as natural progesterone, I personally would never take it in a million years.

Prometrium is DIFFERENT. Is is natural micronized progesterone in an oral dosage. It is the same hormone that your ovaries produce naturally after you ovulate. And the same hormone in natural progesterone creams. However, you may have digestive side effects from taking it orally as opposed to topical application.

Proscar is brand name of the drug finasteride, here is a complete description:
http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/finas.htm
Also you may want to check the research articles section for finasteride and it's result on PCOS. So far I think flutamide and Aldactone (spironolactone) have been studied, but cannot recall the reputation of finasteride.

I've had enormous success with controlling my insulin (have you been tested for Insulin Resistance?) and using Saw Palmetto for my hair and skin. Standardzied Saw Palmetto (see links in my sig. below) has changed my skin and hair to *normal*, I love it!

oh.. and mainstream doctors would likely not hear of saw palmetto since it is an herb - maybe you could consult a naturopath or look in a health food/herbal store. Although there is a brand name version of saw palmetto is used in Europe, developed in Germany I beleive, that is used for shrinking prostate glands since it reduces active testosterone. Sorry I cannot recall the name of it right now.

The main issue is to treat the cause, not the symptoms. The cause of your problems is a hormonal imbalance. So you need herbs that have a hormone balancing effect. For the advanced, find out exactly what your hormonal imbalances are and treat them specifically.

www.botanical.com has a list of a bunch of herbs and what they do. www.mountainroseherbs.com sells just about every herb you could possibly want.

do a google search for "hormone balancing herbs" or "womens herbs" and you should find some good stuff.

Thumbs up

Hi all,
I know that once I started to take this seriously, I went to a nutritionalist who put me on a pituitary supplement since most of the problems are caused by the endocrine system, they all start with the pituitary gland. Since I have started this (it has only been 2 months), my hair is thicker (on my head, a good thing), my hair on my chin is lighter and not growing as fast. And a very good thing is that for the first time in over four years, I didn't have a painful period. Unfortunately, I haven't lost anything, but I havent' gained at least this month....Happiness in the smallest things...

Every one finds their own path, and I think I have found mine, I wish you luck in finding yours.

Happy New Year.....
