i've been taking it for the last week to get over jetlag (i've been hopping between colorado and the uk to see my boyfriend) and noticed that although i really did get restful sleep, i also started to become quite depressed, until yesterday when i was on the verge of panic for the whole day!
i used to suffer from panic attacks as a teen and know how to control them, but this felt like it was an exterior problem if you know what i mean. i couldn't control my racing pulse or the night sweats i had.
today i'm a little better and i've stopped the melatonin.
can anyone shed any light?

I have heard others with complaints of it.
My own DH, had to stop taking it because after awhile it caused anxiety. Sure it put him to sleep, but he couldn't stay asleep after 1-2 hours. Then he woke with either a "hangover" or anxiety/stressed feeling.
It is also addictive. I highly suggest you reseach it on several medical reviews. Several years ago, after it became the "rage" there were many warnings about it.
Please also remember, just because something says "herbal" or "natural", doesn't mean it doesn't have side effects or risks.
*cocane and pot are herbal*
Be careful,
Patty

thanks very much for that info. i've found a site here about it, but it doesn't seem to show the side effects i was feeling - it mentions slight depression, but i was starting to feel REALLY down and VERY panicky.
it's nice to see that i'm not going crazy. two days after stopping it i feel back to my normal self.
i did read somewhere that it can interfere with endocrine problems too - just wish they'd make these warnings clearer.
thanks again for all your feedback. i won't be taking this drug again.

I was wondering if you guys were taking a *natural* melatonin or some synthetic form. Melatonin is a hormone, (NOT a herb) that our brain releases when we go to sleep. It can be interferred with if there is a light on when you sleep. For instance, if you get up in the night to go to the bathroom, if you leave the light off your brain will continue to release melatonin, if you turn the light on, it will stop. Jet lag is also another culprit for interferring with melatonin production as it helps our body to stay on a fairly regular schedule in order to sleep properly. I've taken melatonin in the past and found it wonderful...it really helped me get over some difficult insomnia attacks. I was taking a natural one....sourced I believe from cattle. So, I was just wondering if there was a synthetic one and if that could be causing the problems you guys mention??. I wouldn't want to get the wrong one by mistake, or maybe I just didn't develop any problems with it.
