Default Men and IR?

I know someone who happens to be a man and shows many symptoms of IR. He has the dreaded dark ring around the neck and other indicators that I had when I was really bad. I had acne, dry skin, dark patches, skin tags...well you know the deal. I am wondering if men also would benefit from something like Met. I am concerned because of the damaging effects of IR on the heart and the like. What is your input? TIA..

It sounds like what he has is Metabolic Syndrome, which can also be a source for PCOS for some women. Men, obviously, can't have PCOS but they can definitely inherit the genes responsible for causing poor insulin response leading to the diabetes, heart problems, hyperlipidemia, etc. He should definitely be evaluated by a doctor, preferably an Endo. I am not sure if men are given Met. unless they are definitely diabetic, because Metabolic Syndrome is still pretty new. Even Met. for PCOS is still off-label and some doctors still won't give it out to women with PCOS who don't officially have diabetes, so men might have to fight for it as well. I would have your friend research Metabolic Syndrome and Met. and bring in some info with him to a doctor's appointment so he can show how it could help him so maybe that would expedite his access to the medication and prevent the worsening of his condition. Good luck!!!!

I have wondered about men with IR too. My Dad and his brother are diabetic as was my grandmother (and she probably had PCOS). I told my brother to watch for the symptoms because he has the high cholesterol, triglycerides and BP just like me. He's four years younger and his cholesterol and triglycerices turned bad enough several years ago to be put on meds, and mine have just recently hit borderline high. I've been told IR shows up about 7-years before full-blown diabetes. I also wonder how they would treat it in a man.

My brother (who would be classic PCOS if he were a girl) was dx as borderline diabetic. He was put on Glucophage.
