Hi! Used to be on this forum a lot, haven't been recently cause most of my symptoms came back under control with new BCP and better diet/exercise. But lately been coming back a bit - the main problem I'm having is mental fogginess. I'll go long periods of time where I can't seem to think straight, like my head is wrapped in cotton. It's starting to affect my schoolwork, I just can't seem to get anything done when I'm in this mode, so I have to try to rush through it all in the few spaces of clear thinking that I have. I have a checkup in January and will discuss this with my doctor then, but in the meantime does anyone have any suggestions on how to fight this?

A B-50 complex is supposed to help with this. Now that I think of it, so are Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 3 & 6).
Both are available over the counter in the vitamin section.

Carbs muddle your mind. I found myself to be much more focused and clear-headed as soon as I went on the IR Diet, which I wasn't expecting at all. I've read similar experiences from Cysters on that and other low-carb diets.

i understand.. i've lived in a mental fog for the past 6 years... coudlnt' think straight.. couldnt' get anything accomplished... dropped out of college... sat around and was just so depressed.... Dr. told me depression is a side effect of PCOS.. and the mental fog just goes along with it.... it's very hard to just manage day to day daily tasks....
but for some reason my being pregnant has completely cleared my head up... i feel like i can think and remember things.. depression almost gone....
I"m hoping that after the baby and i get on some meds for the PCOS the fog won't come back.
One of the things that helps me is a hot compress on the forehead and sinus cavity for about 20 minutes and then irrigating my nose with a saline solution.
I have constant sinus problems however, so you might want to check with your doctor.
But I hear ya on the fogginess. I have it *all the time* in fact, I have it right now.
Try putting your head between your knees too.
Good luck!

- sleep deprivation. Most of us don't get nearly enough sleep, and if you're in graduate school, you're probably extremely sleep deprived. Make sure you get 8-9 hours of sleep a night, and it may take you a weekend of sleeping in several hours to really get caught up.
- vitamin deficiencies. Start taking your vitamins. Again, as a grad student, you're probably eating stuff in a catch-as-catch-can situation. That can lead to deficiencies in particular areas. Especially focus on the B-complex vitamins.
- depression. Considering that you're PCOS and (say it with me) a grad student, you're under a lot of stress, and there is a correlation between our fun-fun hormones and depression. Get screened, and get treated.
- not enough protein. Stop drinking sodas and coffee and quit the junk food. Start getting more lean protein, green veggies, and complex carbs into your diet.
Hope you feel better!
