Question Met and Acne

I just started Met two days ago (1000mg). So far it has made me sick to my stomach, but I already have IBS, so I'm used to this. I keep hearing about all the wonderful things it is supposed to do. Has anyone had success with it clearing up acne, and if so, how long did it take? Also, has anyone had success loosing lots of weight- like 50-100lbs on this drug? Just trying to figure out what to expect.

I have been on met for just about a month. I very slowly increased my dose to 1000mg a day. I've been on 1000mg for a full week now. I am not IR. I have oily skin and acne including some cystic acne. Well I would say my skin is a little less oily, but I am still struggling with acne! I was so hoping it would help but so far not really.
I just started taking an antibiotic called erythromycin (in case you are interested) There are no known effects to a fetus when taking while pregnant.
It has been 2 years of non stop cysts on my face to the point that I want to stop ttc, I really hope this antibiotic gives some relief.
I have heard alot of stories about how met really helps with acne,
Good luck to you!

Excuse me if this sounds impolite, but if you are not insulin resistant why did the doctor prescribe metformin?

I'm curious if anyone else's skin has become worse on met? I'm on 1500mg and my skin was pretty clear with occasional breakouts before my dosage increase..now my entire face is covered with cystic acne and has been for over a month. It hurts! I'm about ready to join the pee pals on the dark side-I'm desperate!

Hey Rees,

I asked my doctor the same thing when he prescribed me Met even though I'm not IR. He said there is evidence that taking Met makes you more likely to ovulate on clomid - even if you are not IR. Thats why I am on it.

Mandy, I feel like my skin is worse too. Although, in addition to the Met I have also been on Provera, and then BCP so I don't know if it is all the hormones or the Metformin...

I am also not IR , but my doctor put me on met. He increased the dosage to 1500 mg after 3 months. So far I do not see any changes, and acne on my face is worse. But my doctor is sure that met should help.

Been on Mets for a year now and I'd say there's only a marginal improvement on the acne. Still break out but Retin A gel has helped with controlling it into a fully fleged acne fest.

I am on 1500mg of met and my face has cleared up tremendously. I am 35 and my acne was worse than when I was going through puberty. I have been on met since the end of August.

I've been on met since Sept 1st and it has cleared up my acne amazingly, I still get about 3 zits before AF shows up but other than that its been clear sailing! its also helped with hair growth (not falling out of my head and no longer growing on my chin lol) It doesnt work for all people. Met isn't the "miracle pill" some people make it out to be. Yes it helps with acne (for some people) yes it helps with weight loss (for some people) and yes it helps with ovulation (for some people) but not for everyone.. I hope maybe with a little more time you get some better results, don't give up!

My Dr put me on Met and yaz, granted i only started a day ago but i grilled him alot on everything before deciding on this combo, he told me that the met will help more for regulating periods and insulin resistance, and may help acne and weightloss, weightloss as a result of helpin insulin resistance. he told me that yaz will help with weightloss and acne, and also male pattern hairloss...I'm in no way sure of this but after 30min of grilling my gyn and listening to all my options from his yaz and met sounded the best for me

I'm another one who isn't IR, but RE started me on metformin and then metformin and clomid to help me ovulate. The ovaries have their own type of insulin receptors, and you can supposedly be insulin resistant in your ovaries even though you don't have high blood sugars. I'm not sure how, but it is well researched that metformin can help PCOS patients ovulate.

But I'm hoping the metformin will help me with my acne as well. I tend to get one or two huge huge zits on my face at a time, and hate going out in public.

You can be IR even if your blood sugar is low (I am) High blood sugar might indicate diabeties not insulin resistance. Insulin levels are checked with a different blood test form glucose. I used to break out all over my face constantly. Now I might get the occasional pimple. I was actually told a couple of weeks ago that I had a beautiful complexion! I don't think anyone has ever said that to me.

Hmm, Insulin is the endocrine signaler that helps the cells in your body utilize glucose. When you are IR, it usually manifests as high blood sugars, particularly after carby meals - because your cells are not taking up the glucose in your bloodsteam. Thus, IR manifests as impaired glucose tolerance. Because your blood sugar varies throughout the day, your blood sugar may not be high the whole day. You should try to get your blood sugar tested after a meal, or have an oral glucose tolerance test. If you have insulin resistance, your blood sugar will be high then. If your blood sugar is not high after an oral glucose tolerance test, I don't see how anybody could say that you are IR.

My glucose and glycohemoglobin numbers come back fine but my insulin numbers are high. My body does not know what to do with the sugars it takes in so it just converts them to fat and stores them because it does not know how to properly use the insulin it is producing. My doctor had my blood sugar rechecked and my glycohemoglobin tested to be sure and make sure I was not diabetic. That's why before met I was always hungry and craved carbs and sweets. Now that I'm on met I have lost 10 pounds (without trying) I'm not hungry/craving all the time. I have energy I never had before and my skin has cleared up dramatically.
