Unhappy Met alternatives

Hi all, just wondering if anyone can help me. I took metformin IR for just over 2 years and have been taking glucophage SR for just under a year and am still getting diarrhea everyday, im sick of it and cannot stand it anymore. I find myself having to arrange my day around whether or not i'll be able to get to a toilet. I worry about going out for meals or just going out in general. Anyways does anyone know of an alternative to metformin that may help me? I've looked at avandia and actos but I dont know if they will help me. Thanks for your help x

My Dr. prescribed Glumetza which is a time released Metformin supposed to be easier on your system and cause less problems. I can't say if it works or not I don't start it till tomorrow. But just wanted to tell you about it. Hope you can find something.

Hey, thanks for your replies. Does Avandia lower your blood sugar levels?
The glucophage i am taking at the moment is also time release, i think the symptoms are a little better than what they were on the normal metformin but im still having problems everyday.

Have you changed your diet any? I just started taking met, but a lot of cysters on this site have said that a diet high in carbs and fat caused more side effects. Check the second sticky above. Also, on the "Alternative Medicine" forum about organic apple cider vinegar by Braggs being a natural alternative to metformin.

Hi Smile04,

Chosing a good alternative to met would really depend on what you are taking it for.
Are you taking it because you are IR, TTC, or just using it as Tx for PCOS in general?

Do you want some herbal alternatives, or medical alternatives?

Hey, im taking met for IR and for PCOS in general, im not TTC just yet. Im also taking marvelon. I wouldnt mind looking into herbal and medical alternatives. Just anything that does the same job as met but without the side effects, if something exists!

Hi Smile04,

I had really bad bloodwork results and I was extremely IR. Past 1.5 mths I changed my diet, got more aware of what i put in my mouth, ate low carbs, hardly any rice/potatoes/bread/pasta and went to whole wheat.

My RE asked me to repeat my bloodwork before the next appointment to make sure meds are working. Im insulin resistant. Im so happy that my levels are restoerd to normal and now I can go on to Clomid etc

Before levels-

Fasting Insulin- 16.17 (normal below 10)
Insulin after 1 hr glucose load- 189.22 (should be 40-75)

After levels-

Fasting insulin- 6.76
After glucose load (1 hr)- 63.14

Met works and so does Avandia. I got horrilble side effects on Met and my life was miserable but I just dont get them anymore. I take one pill at night and one in the morning and dont get sideeffects any more. Avandia doesnt have any side effects. You can ask doc to put u on Avandia. Its great but u cant take it if u r pregnnat and u can take met during pregnancy. So I think u should change ure diet and not eat any high carb foods as they worsen the side effects. Also its helped me to eat smaller meals so that my glucose level doesnt drop too much.
