Hi
I am wondering which pill is better for the excessive hair...i have read many cysters saying that the BCP yasmin is the best for excessive hair..... what is the difference between a BCP and Yasmin? i am soooo confussed.. is it that with BCP its best to take it if you dont want to get pregnant.. but if you are trying to get pregnant MET is better? PLEAE HELP confussed!!!
You're right...when a woman is trying to cover symptoms (like excessive hair), BCP can be an option. But as soon as she goes off it she can be back where she began hormonally, because all the synthetic hormone surges are gone. And when she is trying to concieve, the pill isn't an option anymore, because you need to ovulate.
I went off BCP and had no menses on my own for almost 7 years. So I regret that I ever took the pill and that I didn't go on the metformin sooner so i could treat the root of the problem (insulin resistance) and not just cover up the symptoms. If I had done that, I could have avoided years of infertility that resulted when i stopped. It took me over a year on the met to start O'ing again, but it worked. I tell women a lot..if children are in your future (even if it's down the road a while), treat the problem (the insulin aspect) rather than just covering up the symptoms. When we get our insulin controlled usually symptoms improve anyway, and we have the added benefit of often restoring fertility, so we accomplish both.
But we all have different goals and this is my own situation. Every woman has to decide for herself what option is best for her based on her goals surrounding conception.
Hope this helps.

So, I'm getting married in November(ish) and we don't want to have children yet. I've just started with the Met to treat the problem. I'm doing the exercise and diet thing to help my body get back in shape. In short, taking care of the PCOS, but I don't want to get pregnant yet, I don't want to risk only condoms, I do want to get pregnant later......Am I screwed?

arialane- you're not "screwed," you may just have to reconsider your birth control options. I personally have a lot of reservations about hormonal contraception because of the risks associated with adding synthetic estradiol to the mix of elevated estrogens, etc common to women with pcos, and because synthetic progestins have been found to increase insulin resistance, which is the root of the problem. Given that, if it is really, really important that you not get pregnant right away and you are of "normal" fertility, I would suggest that you combine barrier methods with fertility awareness (ccli.org might be a place to look for the latter). Your chances of conceiving while using this combination would be very low. If you cannot combine barriers and sympto-thermal, you can probably use either condom & diaphragm or symptothermal with good reliability. In addition to the contraception you may also have added "protection" in the fact that Met sometimes takes a while to work, so you may not become fertile right away.
Congratulations on your engagement, and best of luck!
