Question Met but not IR?

HI!

I was diagnosed PCOS about 2 months ago. My FSH/LH ratio was off and my testosterone was slightly elevated. However, my fasting glucose and insulin, as well as the 2 hour test were all normal. I convinced my gyno to give me Met when I had failed to O at 50, 100 and 150 mg. of Clomid because I had read some studies to indicate it could help patients O who were not IR. While struggling at about 1000 mg met and 250 Clomid, I had a VERY weak O. Then I went to the R.E. who said to stop taking the Met since I wasn't IR. I am 5'4" and about 145 lbs. Moderate acne on face, chest and back. I took the pill for 10 years and never had irregular cycles before. After stopping the pill, I had 6 normal cycles and then became annovulatory.

The R.E. had us do a cycle of Clomid and dexamethasone last month and no O. This month he plans to do Femara, dexamethasone and 3 injections of Follistim with IUI. Do you think I should try to convince him to put me back on Met? Should I just start taking it? I have some refills.

TIA,

Not all physicians are as open minded as mine, but my Dr told me that he puts ALL of his patients with PCOS on met at some point, because often labs are not the greatest indicator of IR. He says the fasting glucose labs are just not reliable and often women with a "normal" fasting gluc level still derive benefits to their testosterone, free androgen etc. from metformin.

If you'd like to read more, here is an article on met and women without insulin resistance, there is one here:

Yeah my doctor is pretty relaxed about this too! He gives all his patients with PCOS met regardless of if the blood tests say IR or not.

Maybe see a new doctor if this one isn't willing to give it to you again? Sounds like it was starting to help you O! Good luck!

Hi lawladyee...

Good luck to you.

I had asked a question regarding NO IR and still PG...

Here are a couple of threads that might help you. I don't know how to link it correctly, so you might have to copy and paste into the address line.

Met even if fasting insulin levels ok?

I'm going to try and have my Dr. put me on Met before I take Clomid. I'd like to see if Met will help me O before I take clomid, since I think 6 times on Clomid is the max in a lifetime.

Good luck.
