I'm taking 1000mg of Met for the next 3 weeks. Next week I'm fasting for a day for a jewish holiday (sunset to sunset).
I always take Met with breakfast and I'm worried about taking it on an empty stomach.
Is Met too harsh on an empty stomach and a day of no food?
Should I skip the Met that day or switch to taking it at a later time that night?
I reccommend approaching your Dr regarding the fast. You should never discontinue your medication for any reason without consulting him. He may also have some guidelines for this type of thing. If insulin and blood sugar are a concern, i think you need to tell him your plans so he can advise you.
Good luck!

Oh, I agree! Talk with your doctor...there are others out there who celebrate holidays like this as well, who are not able to skip a meal without affecting their health. Diabetics and others need to eat regularly to keep everything in check. I would talk with your doc, or your clergy may have some ideas too for suggestions on how to observe this day and take care fo yourself as well- I'm sure between them and you, you will come up with a solution that will work for you.

I just want to add that under Jewish law, people with medical conditions that would make fasting difficult for them health-wise are "excused" from fasting. Growing up, my dad had chronic stomach ulcers (before drugs like Zantac were available), and fasting all day would have caused him stomach pain, so on Yom Kippur he either didn't fast or he would fast for half the day.
I think if you take the Met with your evening meal before sundown when the holiday starts, then take it again the next evening after sundown, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But check it out with your doc for sure. If he advises you not to take the Met, then you need to decide if you feel you should fast or not. God will forgive you if you don't, since you may have a medical "excuse".
Btw, Happy New Year!

Thanks so much for your replies. My doctor wasn't too helpful. Well, not helpful at all. I think I will take the Met will a big breakfast and then not eat again until sundown. Hopefully I feel ok but will have some nuts around just in case....
Melissa how did your fast go? I want to fast for religious reasons (fast and pray for a day)....but I am afraid too. Maybe I could try the big breakfast not eat for the rest of the day...take the other meds with some nuts when I go to sleep.

I'm interesting in hearing from Melissa again too.
For what it's worth, AW, I am a firm believer that God is as pleased with your desire to fast, as he is from the obedience of fasting itself. Your desire to do it, must make God's heart happy, even if your medical condition limits that you can fast. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for asking christyz and AmericanWoman. I really appreciate everyone's replies and interest.
I decide to take only 500mg (instead of 1000) with yogurt in the morning. I felt fine most of the day just really tired which I probably would have felt in any case. At around 4pm I had a little juice and water because I couldn't keep my eyes open. I felt pretty good after that and broke my fast around 7:30pm with a nut and seed bar.
Later I succumbed to half a bagel with lox and cream cheese. I felt a little queasy after that but it didn't last.
I was prepared to have a little chicken broth during the day but I didn't need it and I wasn't too nervous about what the Met was doing because I only to half the dosage.
