I just heard recently that people who take met/glucophage cannot donate blood? Is this true?
The last time I gave blood was about two years ago, before I started taking met. I almost passed out afterwards (so unlike me), but I just thought it was due to low blood sugar. It had been several hours since I'd eaten. Now that I'm brave enough to donate again, I hear this in passing about the met. Does anyone know about this?
TIA

Well in Canada...I also donate blood and I have let them know that I am on Met. So far it's been no problem.
If that has changed I would like to know.

I donate on a regular basis. I wasn't sure if I'd be allowed to donate again since I'm on Metformin now. Since I live in Florida -they are in need of blood right now so I called the local Blood back and they told me I would be fine to donate.
I used to get sick and lightheaded when I use to donate - now I do it during work w/o a problem. I think I eat a lot better now than I did in highschool.

Check with your local Red Cross, but Santa'sbaby is right...My Mom works for Canadian Blood services and metformin isn't a problem. There are lots of drugs that are safe for blood donation: many anti-depressants, thyroid and blood pressure meds. I'd give your Red Cross a call.
