Hi all.....I am new here, my very first post. I was officially diagnosed w/ PCOS on Feb 1st. Before that, I didn't get a regular period at all and at age 17 I had to take Provera to get my first one, then was put on BC. I stopped BC in Nov 05 and then finally was diagnosed in Feb. Anyways, I took Prometrium for 10 days and then started Metformin (500mg at first) on 2/10. For those of you on met, how long did it take to get AF? My doc says I shouldn't expect it for 3-6 weeks. I'm just anxious b/c we are TTC and of course nothing can be done really until AF comes. After that I'll be taking Clomid on days 2-6.
I started Met about 7months ago (1500mg) before I started it ,,my AF would come between 30-90 days(It was hell trying to plan for vacations).since being on Met my af comes between 29-41 days..It's getting there..I have read that the more you take it,the better it works....Kim
Hi there, and welcome! We'll I've been on Met for almost a month (1500 mg). I got af six days into starting, although I had been waiting for almost 3 months for it. So we'll see what happens in the next couple of weeks. It doesn't work that quickly for everyone, but I've read many stories where it works rather quickly for others. The best thing is to give it time, and if after 3-6 mos, nothing happens, talk to your doc about an increase. Also, diet plays a big role. You should cut out refined carbs, and try to balance the good carbs you do eat with protein. I have a book on the IR-Diet, and it says for every 15 g of carbs, you should eat 7 g of protein.
Best wishes!

About 11 weeks on 1500 mg before I got my first period. they remainded irregular (28 days to 70+ days) until I quit counter-acting the drug with my diet and started eating to control my insulin/blood sugar.
Try to be patient, and don't go with the Dr's timeline...my Doc got all in a snit when I wasn't menstruating after 6 weeks..he needed to just let the drug do it's job. Hormones don't get bungled overnight and they don't get fixed overnight either.
All the best!

Yes, I am on Met and for the first two months I ate very little carbs and had a pretty regular cycle then the holidays hit (& the endo yelled at me-I cried-for not eating carbs/dairy, etc.) and I slacked off and SHOCKER!! my AF went to 36 days and now I am on day 40 and no signs (NO pg. either). In my heart I feel there is a connection despite what the doctor says. All I know is my body doesn't like sugar. If i eat it alone then my throat gets itchy and my candida (vaginal yeast) acts up BIG TIME oh, and this one patch of my skin will itch. THERE MUST BE A CONNECTION....Keep that in mind like Christy says. I will be returning to the NO carb or LOW carb option after this weekend and pray the AF returns to normal.
Christy--do you feel no or very little carb is better than more carbs but always paired with protein...I felt good on NO carbs but it was too hard to maintain and I got cranky with it?
Good luck!

I don't feel normal either and I think that's been the hardest thing for me to deal with. When i was 17 my mom took me to the doc b/c I hadn't gotten a period, so they induced it with Provera and put me on BC. I still had weight issues and hair growth on BC but it wasn't terrible until I stopped taking BC in November in order to get PG. And the kicker is that I was never TOLD that I had PCOS even though it's been in my charts for years. My doc said that my original doctor probably didn't want to scare me. Hello, I had a right to know. I've never felt fully "normal" and have always been self concious about my hairy arms, hair on my face and weight gain in the stomach area. It's hard right now b/c DH and I really want to have a baby and I am trying to stay positive. It is hard though because we can't start any fertility drugs until I get my period. I'm frustrated but hoping the metformin will help out.
Thanks everyone for your comments and support! I don't feel so alone anymore dealing with this.
mazarin~~I'm so sorry that things are'nt happening for you yet..It's only been a couple of months,so hold in thereIt just takes time..You are in my thoughts....Kim
It took me about 2 weeks to get my first one, and about 2 months to be regular. My doc says after a woman with PCOS starts taking glucophage, it can take anywhere from a month to 6 months to actually ovulate. Remember, even though you have AF, doesn't mean that you ovulated. Good luck!

Heidi Diagnosed September 2005 Age 26 Initial Symptoms: Irregular cycles, hirutism, weight gain, depression, panic attacks. I followed the IR diet which paired carbs with protien to buffer the insulin spike. You had no daily limit on your carb intake, but you could only have 15g max carb per 3 hour period and it was balanced with protien.
I could not tolerate low carb diets and they are very hard to maintain long term, which is why I tried this way to eat. I have been maintaining my weight loss for over 29 months now and I still use these principles...managing hormones is a long term thing for insulin resistant people, so I'll be eating this way for life. It's a very healthy and sensible way to eat and I'm so grateful for how it has helped me personally.
Hope that answers the question.

I wanted to know if anyone had a situation like mine...
5 months ago I started metformin (started wid 500-worked upto 1500 XR)
My cycle dramatically went from 40-60 to 25-28 days the very first month on metformin.
I went on my first clomid cycle on 1/18/2006.......now am on CD35.......no AF yet......BFN on CD23/CD30.
Been on mid-level carm diet.....ie...was low carbing, but sometimes had forbidden stuff too..........that was all along,so not a factor I think just now.
So did any of u cysters, get regular cycles on metformin, then go back to wierd long ones WHILE STILL ON METFORMIN??
IMG2005~~compared to a year ago my af is regularHowever ,now I'll get af for 2 days skip a day or 2 and get it again for 3 or more days..That's the only difference I've found.....Kim
I ovulated on 1500mg on the first month and am now 20wks pg. Best of luck! Everyone is different. Hang in there.
IMG2005, i'll be curious to see how my cycles are after having this bumpkin. I was not on long enough to see a pattern. When I was on 750mg I got AF 3mths consecutively like clockwork and then I ovulated and got pg when I increased to 1500mg that one month. Hope your cycles regulate. GL!
it took me almost two months to get my period after starting Met... but after that it was a normal cycle (til I screwed up and got lax with taking it). Hoping it will normanlize again!
