Smile Met has made a difference

I just wanted to tell everyone how met has changed me and my life. I have been on it for only 5 days now. Wow what a difference. I dont have any of the tummy problems everyone talks about. I have the opposite. Constipation. Go figure.

I have no desire for the sweets, they actually nausiate(sp?) me. Before I started the Met I wanted sweets all day. If not the sweets I craved the carbs. I dont know if I have lost any weight, I only check every week. I will let you know if that has changed. I weigh 65 lbs too much and I am not trying to loose weight, just not to gain any more. To loose would be great. I would only think it will go down without all of the sugary/carbs.

I feel better in the head as well. I dont have so many negative thoughts in my head. I still need to vent, but I think I am getting better at that too.

Have a great week ladies.

Default Hi thetallone

Looks like we're somewhat in the same boat. I started metformin back in September at 500 mgs, then 1000 mgs after a few days. I felt SOOO much better just after a couple of days being on it. Same thing with my thoughts getting a lot more positive, increase in energy and motivation. Since then, I've had my period show up exactly on the 28th day for both October and November, which I don't think has ever happened before! Chin hair growth has gone down. However, about two weeks ago I got scared because the "yuckiness" started coming back..mood swings, fatigue. I called my doc and she upped me to 850 mgs twice a day, and already I feel pretty darned good again! I'm about 40 pounds overweight and don't have the sweet cravings I used to have either..woohoo! I do notice that if I do eat junk, I really FEEL like junk, so that's a big motivator to stay away from it. I've only lost 5 pounds, but that's okay. Slow and steady!

Best of luck to you!

Annie

thetallone and annie,

It's good to hear your success stories with met. I've just started met (I'm at 1000mg./day), so it's encouraging to see some cysters have a good experience with it.

I don't seem to have any of the stomach issues either, except for constipation (but I'm usually constipated anyway). Already I have noticed a decrease in sugar cravings..usually, I'd want something sweet after meals and/or in the afternoons, but not since starting on met. I don't know about the mental improvements, though, but it's still too early to tell.

Met seems to have a VERY adverse affect when one eats simple carbs, though. I ate some roasted potatoes yesterday and....boy oh boy! I felt pretty bad for awhile afterwards, but that's been the only time.

I hope that I'll see some of the weight loss and acne clearing effects, too, once I've been on it for awhile. It'll be nice to get some help with all of the hard work I'm already doing to recover from PCOS.

I think it is wonderful that your having the great success that I have been having. I am one of the sisters that did not head the Dr.'s warning about interuteren cancer. I ended up with the hysterectomy that came without having my period for years on end. I was able to keep my overies and now that I am finally getting treatment I think I am on the way to a long and healthy life.

I am on 1000mg and doing great. Next week up to 1500mg, hopefully I dont have the tummy problems. I am also taking Yaz.

Have a great week.

I'm glad to hear that all of you are having such success on Met. I just started my first dose tonight with dinner. So far (two hours in) I feel fine - cross your fingers for me. I'm excited to finally be on this medication. For years I've been feeling like crap and have been gaining weight like it's going out of style. I don't really care about losing weight with Met, but I'd like to keep things stead - and hey, it wouldn't hurt to lose a few.

3 weeks in for me and I am so much more positive, I do have some tummy problems (but I always did due to IBS and damage in my stomache) mut more constapation than I used to which I'll take cause its better than having the runs all the time. My cravings have majorly changed. I have been on this Root Beer kick like its about all I'm drinking pop wise I am usually strictly Dr Pepper or Coke if DP not availible. I've been craving chocolate a lot which I never do I'm usually one to turn it down luckily my calcuim chew is chocolate and usually keeps the cravings down a bit. Not really craving sweets at all except those 2 things. I also can't stand pickles anymore they make me want to gag...and I used to love pickles. I've had trouble with my feet for years and since being on gluc my feet don't hurt near as bad and not nearly as much.

Smile Met Success

Wow, it's so cool to see everyone on this board with good experiences!

Since being on the metformin, I'm now noticing that I'm more alert and energetic and having the positive thoughts that others here have mentioned. I now have the energy to exercise more frequently, which is what I'll need to do to lose this weight once and for all. I'm not starving all the time either; it's so great to go through the day without constantly thinking about food. Also, maybe I'm imagining this, but my skin is clearing up too...the pimples on my face that have been festering for weeks are now healing. And just this morning, I sprung out of bed and made coffee and cooked breakfast - something that I haven't done on a weekday for years! I don't want to get too hopeful, but...wow, I can really tell a difference already.

Athletic Cyster, I can relate....I was naturally thin for years and was always able to maintain my weight by eating and exercising moderately. However, in the past two or three years, I've been steadily gaining weight and feeling terrible without any change to my normal eating habits. I think I gained at least 20 lbs in the past year alone, which just isn't normal. Gaining all of the weight has caused me to feel extremely insecure and resurrected an old eating disorder that had been in remission for many years. Most of the docs I went to thought that my weight gain and tiredness was due to the ED and depression, even though I've since recovered from those things. I knew instictively that there was something physically wrong with me, but it seemed that no one was really listening to me.

Just last month, however, I finally went to a really good, very competent doctor who figured out the REAL reason why I've been gaining weight and feeling bad. With a lot of support, I've been able to beat the ED, now it's time to beat the PCOS! I'm normally not a big fan of pharmaceutical drugs, but it's great that there's a drug out there to help women like us.

Uh I forgot to add this to my post but....thetallone, I'm so sorry to hear that you had been diagnosed with interuterine cancer and had to get a hysterectomy. I'm glad to hear that you are doing better now and that the met is helping you, too. I feel the same way you do; it's great to finally feel hopeful about having a better quality of life in the very near future.

Hollymb, I, too, don't seem to have the constant sugar cravings anymore. It sucks trying to diet while fighting a constant urge to eat sweets and simple carbs. It's good that you've been able to kick the soda habit and not desire the chocolate and pickles as much. I think I will always love chocolate, but at least I can go a day or two now without absolutely having to eat it.

I am not upset about the hysterectomy. I have come terms with it. I actually ended up with a unexpected pregnancy when I was 24, while I was on the pill. I now know that is somewhat common with PCOS.

Anyhow, I don't regret having it done. I have my one great son he is 12 and I am thankful for that. We did not intend on any more children as I had my DH get a vasectomy. So to have the hysterectomy was a blessing in disguise, no more horrible cramps, having gushes of blood, and in general wanting to keel over and die.

It did take me longer to find a Dr to treat me for the PCOS. She is wonderful and I am so fortunate to have found her.

I was feeling fine for the first couple of weeks too, I thought I was in the clear and then suddenly I started getting diarrhea. Not nice when you are working and have to run to the bathroom 3 times in 1 hour and you only just make it in time.

At my appt yesterday my doc told me to stop taking it as it was not worth the problems it was causing. I asked if I could still take 500mg at night and he was fine with that since the night dosage wasn't causing issues.

Jamie,

You may want to ask about the ER version of the Met. That is what I am on and I am not having the problems. I have heard that it is easier on your tummy. I take it all at one time. If it starts to bother me then I can space out the doses. Just a question for the Dr.

Good luck.

I did ask about the ER version when he prescribed it originally but his opinion was that it doesn't work so he would only prescribe me the standard version. It wasn't regulating my cycles anyway so he has given me Clomid now.

Good luck with it

Congrats Prettygurl on the AF. I hear that it can improve to number of AF's you have every year with Met.

Prettygurl,

Congrats on getting your AF! That's my goal too, though I haven't been taking it for long enough to know if it's going to happen or not (I'm only a week into it). However, I feel a million times better now that I'm on Met.

Did anyone notice that the tired, dragging feeling they had before Met decreased significantly once they went on it? I used to be so tired that I could literally sleep all day. My husband never understood why I was so groggy, but after a little time grocery shopping or cleaning the house I'd need a nap. I'm not overweight and work out a lot so it was really unexplainable. Since the Met I feel so much better!
