Unhappy Met & hypoglycemia?

Hi cysters! I was diagnosed on Monday with PCOS/started on 500MG of Metformin Tuesday and by Saturday morning I was feeling so bad I had to stop them.
I couldn't sleep at night with very rapid and loud heartbeats.
I was missing one page from the medication information I was given when I bought it so I wasn't sure if this was another side affect or not.
Saturday morning I was feeling so bad I went back to my pharmasist to get the rest of medication information and to my surprise all my new weird symptoms were there.
This is what it said:
This medicine usually does not cause low bood sugar (hypoglycemia), but this effect may occur if you do not consume enough calories. The symptoms include chills, cold sweat, dizziness, , drowsiness, shaking, rapid heartbeat, weakness, headache, , fainting, tingling of the hands or feet, or hunger.
Many of the symptoms I was having since I started on Met. >_<;
Information also said to eat a quick source of sugar such as table sugar, honey, candy, orange juice, or soda to quickly raise blood sugar level with these side effects.
Doctor told me to stop Met until I saw him on Monday, so we'll see. I was looking so much forward this medication to help me... ):
These side effects are very rare.
Has anyone else had this experience with Met?
*hugz* ~Mari

Although the symptoms you mentioned ARE those of low blood sugar, 500 mg is a very very small dose of Gluc. Most doctors say the minimum effective dose is 1500 mg and I just can't see that 500 mg would be causing so much low blood sugar - unless MAYBE you didn't eat anything at all.

I have had low blood sugar several times on Gluc, but I am diabetic and take a pretty large dosage. I was also taking a known glucose-lowering drug when the low blood sugars happened.

Anything is possible, but even if you did have low blood sugar, eating something would have made it go away. I would think the symptoms are more just getting the medicine in your body and your pancreas reacting to not needing to pour as much insulin out as before. As long as you eat regularly and AVOID excess sugars, I think you could go on Gluc and be fine.

Hope this helps!

Question

I did take each of my pills (I was taking two a day) with food. I was trying to cut on carbs but would eat almost regular meals with them so I don't get it.
We'll see what the Doctor says about it tomorrow.
Thanx so much for the info.

When I was taking only 500 mg a day, my blood sugar went totally wacky and I got sicker. for me, one pill was kind of like a teaser--it was not enough to control the symptoms, so my body just compensated by kicking out more insulin. When I increased the dose, the problem went away.

Unhappy

Angie, did your doctor told you to increase your dose or you did?
I was hoping mine to do the same since I'm praying something works for me, but the nurses on the phone told me he said to start taking half of one of the pills in the morning and the other half in the afternoon, he decreased dose... (?????)
The nurse even said if my body can't handle met I would probably have to go on birth control, but I don't want that because I've been on the pill before and the only thing they do is regulate my period and last time I took them I had to stop due to side effects. Ahh!!!!! I don't know what to do anymore...

Arrow decreasing 1000 dose to 500

Just an update on how my treatment for pcos is going.
Endo had to decrease my 1000mg (I was taking two 500mg pills= 1000mg) to a 500mg dose do to my hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) symptoms. So now I'm going to be taking half a pill in the morning/half in the afternoon. 500mg
Doctor explained a bit better what happened. Seems my body went into shock when it was given what it was needing for so long. He said the dose was probably working too well and body couldn't handle the huge change so he lowered my dose until my system gets used to it. Lost 4 lbs on the few days I took it!

*crossing fingers AGAIN, and this time really tight, so new dose works fine*
Wish me luck please? *worried*

~Mari
