Default met with low blood sugar

Has anyone been prescribed Met and had normal or low blood sugar tests? I got prescibed it becuase my doctor said my 2 hr gtt was lower than normal. She thinks too much insulin in my body. I am on day 2 of it and already have to stop becuase my blood sugar dropped to 60 after eating today.

From what I've heard, I think Met regulates your blood sugar, so if you're producing too much, it lowers it, and if you aren't producing enough, it makes enough. Something like that (someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong!). I've never had issues with blood sugar, never felt weak or lightheaded or hypoglycemic or anything until I started Met. It wouldn't happen all that often, but enough so that I would always carry something with me in my purse to eat just in case I felt shaky or whatever. I was afraid Met was giving me blood sugar issues, but my husband and doctor both said that it doesn't do that.

I think it's a drug that can take some getting used to, whether because of gastro issues or just how you feel in general. But definitely call your doctor if you don't feel right. I know it took me a good month to feel better on it and several months to feel almost normal on it.

I agree with sheepie -- it shouldn't cause you to become hypoglycemic. This is from a pharmacology source I have: "At therapeutic doses, metformin does not cause hypoglycemia in diabetic or nondiabetic individuals." Met just acts to increase the effects of your already present insulin so that your pancreas doesn't have to make as much, and your organs are more sensitive to it.

On the other hand, I have always had reactive hypoglycemia, for whatever reason. I also always have a snack on hand all the time in case I start to feel shaky. The met doesn't seem to have made this worse, but coffee/caffiene sure does, so watch your caffeine intake. It is strange that your sugar dropped AFTER you ate... you may have something else going on entirely. Or else Met really does affect you... don't have any good answers, sorry!
