Default Met and low-fat, low cholesterol diet. Anyone have success with it?

Hello,

Well after getting back my blood results from my doctor I can't go on the low carb diet due to my hdl levels, my doctor is highly recommending the low fat, low cholesterol diet. So has anyone had success with it? I have also noticed I am feeling better with the met. This makes my 2nd week on met and I am feeling a lot better and less s/e and I seem to be gaining more energy, but at the end of the day I am ready to snooze.

My doctor said I am a candidate for heart disease and would'nt recommend low carb at all due to all the fats.

Lori

Hi Lori--Have you looked into the South Beach Diet? Basically it is a low-carb, low-fat diet (I'm simplifying a bit here), focusing on 'good' carbs but lower fat than say, the Atkins diet. Also I think it's a myth that low carb diets have to be high fat--I mean you could eat fish & chicken, eggs, veggies and salad, some oil such as olive oil and lower fat dairy products and definitely keep the carbs down and your blood sugar in check. Just something to think about. This is only my opinion, of course, but it seems when I focus on eating real, whole foods (w/little chemicals and additives), I feel much better and that I am developing more lifestyle habits (rather than a 'diet' per se). Anyhoo sorry if I sound like I'm on a soapbox here but I am very wary of the medical community's lack of information regarding nutrition!

I wish you the best as you find an eating plan that works for you.

I am supposed to be on a low fat diet because of my cholestrol but the stuff that is bad for me tastes so good. I have been trying to cut down on my intake of fat though.
My husband on the other hand is diabetic and has heart disease. Though I can't share my experiences(since I have none yet) I can share my husbands experiences dealing with glyburide & low fat diet.
In the last few months before my husband was diagnosed with heart disease he stopped eatting all red meat, butter, and other high fat content foods and has lost over 30lbs.
It is really amazing that he has lost anything considering he eats & eats & eats.
Last week he was at a seminar for heart disease where they covered everything he needs to know about the food he eats.
They stressed proportion sizes were very important so now he has attempted not only only eat low fat but smaller proportions as well. I guess over the next couple of months we will see the results.
Your post is the first one about diet & pcos that actually makes sense to me. Most women with PCOS have high cholestrol and yet they do the Atkins diet to me that just seems like a bad idea.
Good Luck with the dieting and if you find any good low fat chocolate recipes let me know.
