Hi, I'm new here and have a question about the possibility of Met lowering ones resistance to infections. I started taking Glucophage (1000mg) in late Sept. In Oct. I got a sinus infection for the first time in my life and was treated with antibiotics. A few weeks go by and I am diagnosed with bronchitis and treated with antibiotics. After several trips to the ER with a high fever and persistant cough followed by a CAT scan, my drs figured out that I still had that same sinus infection and it was severe. I'm now on my 5th round of antibiotics and I still have the same infection. At one of my ER visits the dr mention that it could be the Met keeping my blood sugar too low to fight the infection. They tested my blood sugar and it was normal. No one has mentioned it since, yet that was 2 rounds of antibiotics ago. I'm still wondering if it could be affecting my ability to fight this infection.
PCOS Dx in 1991, no treatment
9/03 started 1000mg Glucophage XR
1/22/04 Increased to 1500mg Glucophage XR
3/05 Reluctantly started Mircette to stop a 4 month AF
5/23/05 Laparoscopy done - Diagnosed with Endometriosis
Current Meds: 1500mg of Metformin ER, Mircette BCP(continuously, not taking the 4th week) & Lexapro 10mg
I have never heard of anyone around here having that problem, but I know for a fact that Met does *not* cause hypoglycemia so it is probably not related.
I hope you feel better soon!!

In the year before I was diagnosed with diabetes, I had chronic bronchitis following a bad cold that lasted for over a year. After starting on Met, the cough finally went away. I didn't even connect the two until months later. For me, I think that having undiagnosed diabetes made me more prone to infection, and once I got my blood sugars under control with Met, my immune system was strengthened. I have had only one mild cold in the two years since starting Met. I work at a school, where the students and teachers get sick all the time, and I don't. Might be something to do with my improved health through diet, exercise, and vitamin supplements as well.

Other meds: Verapamil and Altace(for blood pressure)
Started laser hair removal 7/29/03, completed 3/04 (it works!)
UAE for fibroid 3/24/03 and 3/16/04
You just made me think about that....since I have started the met almost two years ago, I have not had one cold or any kind of infection! Wow...for me to go two years with out getting a cold is pretty amazing! LIndy is right...the met should not be affecting your sugar levels. Let me ask you this....I know this is a wacky question in today's world, but are you under a large amount of stress or anything that may be keeping your resistance down? Also, are you taking any multi- vitamins to help keep your body up and ready to fight? It's rough..my parents get nasty sinus infections, and when they get them, it's usually around the holidays when they are running around like crazy and stressed out. I hope you feel better soon, and I don't think it's likely the met is causing your problem with the infections.

Thank you for the responses. I guess being stressed is a possibility with a 16 month old running around and still not sleeping through the night. This last round antibiotics seems to be helping though.

Hmm..interesting question. Like KYBluegrass, I've been on met 2.5 years and have had only one cold...so for me it has improved an already pretty good immune system. But for me, I don't know if the met affects it directly as much as the many things I have done to better my health...normal hormones, regular exercise, moderated diet.
Hope you get feeling better soon.
