I am interested in people posting an outline of the types of foods/meals they eat and what to avoid having. I know that sugar and heavy oils are bad but okay, what do you eat to keep "normal". I just started Metformin today and I am curious about what others eat.
Breakfast?
Lunch?
Dinner?

Well, let's see...I follow the insulin resistance diet, so a normal breakfast for me is a bowl of cereal, or an english muffin with a little fat free cream cheese.
Lunch is usually one of those tuna salad kits with crackers, or a zone bar if it's a busy day. If I have a lunch of all salad, I tend to have the lovely gastric side effects.
Supper is just whatever everyone else is having, just a sensible portion. I just try to avoid a lot of greasy or fatty fast foods- If I overdo on carbs, I'll know it. Seems that for me if I balance some protein with my carbs, I don't have any problems. Hope this helps!

I'm on 1000mg Met daily for 10 days now. The first day I'm taking Met I felt like my happy days of eating is over.. ha ha.. I took a lot of plain water everyday and eat protein. Fish, tofu etc.
My breakfast - 1 mug Complan
Lunch - Fish, Vege & medium size fruit
Dinner - Pasta (durum wheat semolina) with sauce & plain water
I follow this and happily found that I have shed from 119.5 kg to 115.1 kg in 7 days! Good luck! Eat anything moderately.. stay away from high carb & sugary things!
I have been on Met since May 2002 and I have lost about 30lbs. The two things I noticed I really can't eat other than fatty foods are lettuce and cabbage. They definitely send me trotting. lol. Good luck with the Met.

stay far away from greasy/fatty foods, I have had learned that lesson the hard way, I always end up regretting it a couple hours after eating anything greasy or fatty
What a great post. I am hoping I will be prescribed metformin in March when I see a new endocrinologist.
I now know if I am prescribed met to avoid greasy/fatty foods.
However, my questions is... when you experienced side effects, what time of day did you experience them the most? In the morning? At night? The reason I ask is that I have a one-hour transit ride to work every morning and another hour back home at night and would hate to all of a sudden have to trot while I was on the bus, if you know what I mean...

hi
seeing as you work and also have that long ride to and from work i would suggest that you take it in the evening because at least if you do get the side effects you wont have far to run lol
because, and i dont know if its the same for everyone but when i get it its something i cant control i need to go straight away
I have been on Glucophage since October 2000. I am taking 2000 mg a day and I can say is to stay away from sweets and fatty greasy food.
It is hard especially around your menstrual cycle when you crave sweets. It is okay with 1 piece of sweet but don't be like me. I recently baked brownies and ate half of the pan. Boy did I feel it. I also suffer from IBS, irritable bowel syndrome.
I have learned that it is hard for me to restrict carbs when my body needs fiber. My doctor recommends I eat more bran cereal. I have learned to eat cereal without sugar. I don't crave for sugar with cereal now.
a year and a half ago i was taking met and one day while i was leaving work i felt like i had to use the restroom but i thought about missing my bus so i said forget, i'll just wait 'till i get home so i get on the bus and a few blocks later i had to get off the bus and go to the nearest restroom. i stopped taking it shortly after that.
i'm back on it and i'm sticking to it.
one of the side effect is diarrhea. also, i feel like i don't eat as much.
