Hi Julie-
I've taken both, and continue to take Met xr. I can't tell you the scientific differeance, but the xr is 'longer acting' and takes longer to break down in your body.... kinda like 'time release capsules' All i CAN say is that I totally could NOT take regular MET and the XR is fine for me. I think the XR is slightly easier to tolerate...maybe your dr. was hoping for fewing long term side effects?? The XR comes in different doseage levels- for example, the lowest dose is 500mg, 1500 will be 3 pills. Maybe he wanted to start on a lower dose and work your way up? I dunno.
Good Luck!
