okay well i thought i was the only one. except...i haven't been on it for that long! I was on it 2 yrs ago before i got prego and i didn't do anything for me then.....this time i was on it for a little less than 3 months and it didn't do anything.....i know my experience may not help since i wasn't on it for too long but let me tell you the only things that happened to me on met was be bloated all of the time, gained a couple of pounds, was moody, and had sweet cravings......my RE doesn't know of all of this but i went off of it, but i can tell you i feel much better.....try getting off of it for a while and see how you feel, if you feel better than you know it's not working!

I did! Allegedly we are the .5% of the population this happens to.

I lost it on Fortamet tho.

I asked RE about fortamet, he said it's basically the same thing, so there was no point in switching......I wonder if I should stop the met altogether and see if I lose any weight? I have been on a strict 1200-1500 cal a day diet, no refined anything, blah blah blah, run three miles three times a week, on top of other cardio and strength training, and my weight will not move, not up or down. I've eliminated the BC, the SSRI, and all meds except the met.

sheesh I think I'll do a google on met, see what I find.

not much I'm afraid other than the standard rundown of met symptoms - if you'd like to see my story - I just posted it in this forum - I think we've gone down similar paths.

New Here and Need Med Help Please!!

Fortamet and Metformin are basically the same med, except that the fortamet is extended release, so I guess it keeps your blood levels more even keeled. I can't tell you why my body decided to let the fat that i gained on met go only after i added fortamet, tho.

When i just quit the Met cold turkey - i at least stoppped gaining, but I didn't lose what had already been put on.

Met didn't do anything for me either. I was only on it for two months, so one might argue that I didn't give it much of a chance though. However, I felt pretty awful the whole time on it. I was nauseated, dizzy, got a lot of headaches and worse of all (since I was ttc), it worked against the clomid I had taken that month, which has always made me O at the lowest dosage, and I ended up having a 65+ day cycle in which I never O'd and felt crappy the whole time. I felt instantly better once I came off met and got pg on clomid alone the following month.

Well, funny you mention the TTC..... I was thinking about it, and I started met (this time) back in Feb of 02. Right before that I had lost about twenty lbs through diet and exercise. I conceived in the middle of Feb, so weight went up after that. I went off met partway through pregnancy, and after I had the baby, I was able to lose weight no problem, not quickly, but at least it was moving. After I weaned the baby, I went back on met........HAven't been able to lose since, I've been a steady 217-219. I'm just afraid if I come off the met, I will balloon. *sigh*

Met really worked a number on me...I gained weight, acne got worse, hair fell out again, libido in toilet, TIRED, and mood rages. Great! It didn't make me O either--the goal. I tried it for 8 months and just couldn't take the negative effects anymore. Maybe if I had O'd it'd have been different. Most of the negative effects continued on even after stopping met...I couldn't lose the weight I had gained and acne was still kinda bad.

I eventually found and took DCI (600 mg) and the symptoms began to reverse (except hair *sigh*) and did O...rest is in siggie-history.

So if met isn't your thing, there's also the drugs Avandia, Actos, Acarbose, Byetta, and more.

There's the "herbs:" DCI, chromium, cinnamon, NAC, prickly cactus ??, and a million more.

Just wanted to say, met is not the only drug..my RE threw up her hands when met didn't work and pushed straight for IVF. WTF??? Glad we didn't listen!

What is DCI? D-Chiro-inositol? Duh. I am def going off the met, I just always hear so much about it being a wonder-drug, thought maybe it was in my head. I am currently taking (should update my siggie): Vitex, green tea extract, NPC, cinnamon, CLA, and chromium. Sheesh.

I have also been on met for almost 4 years now and I feel like it is doing nothing for me. I still have crappy skin, thinning hair very whacky cycles and no O...I am afraid to quit taking it cuz I am afraid the symptoms I have will become worse. I also just got another 3 month supply...Has anyone that quit met had their PCOS symptoms get worse? It just makes me feel gassy, bloated and it is probably why I feel so tired all the time!

G/L and do let me know how you do when you go off it. I am really thinking about taking a break from met when I get thru with this last order I just got! I am sick of feeling sick and tired all the time.

OK here's the scoop- Just got off the phone w/ RE's nurse, they are going to test for Cushing's to rule it out, and prob will go off met when the results of the cortisol test come back. They said fortamet and met and gluc are all basically teh same thing, just different manufacturers, plus my blood sugar and insulin are well within normal anyway, so switching to something like Avandia would do no good either. This is what they said to me- " There may be no answer for you." WTH? Seriously? I have to just sit by helplessly as my body balloons up while I'm busting my butt exercising and watching everything that passes my lips?

Harumph. I never tested positive for IR or anything else, but an insulin-sensitizer still helped me. I never had "abnormal" testosterone either but still have male-pattern hairloss and was helped to a fair degree by spiro (until I took met, my stupid mistake). I got that "there's nothing we can do (except $30,000 of IVF or injectibles)" garbage too, after met didn't work for me. I just refuse to belive that "nothing" until I've tried everything. There are many, MANY women with PCOS who don't test IR or diabetic and yet have been helped by an insulin sensitizer. I'd still push for a trial of something different if Cushings isn't the problem...what can it hurt? Just monitor your liver closely to avoid complications.
