Question Met not working- am I the only one?

I have been on Met since June 2002 and still haven't gotten a period. Well, I got one around October but it was thanks to Provera. So my RE increased my dosage to 850 2x a day (from 500 2x a day) and I've been on that dosage for 2 months and nothing.
All of my bloodwork came back totally normal, so i'm not even IR.
Is it possible that Met doesn't work for some people or am I just a special case?? It seems like Met gives everyone a period within a couple months, but it hasn't done sh*t for me.
I am beginning to wonder if ANYTHING will bring on af. I feel like i'm going through menopause at 23 years old.

Well, if you are not insulin resistant, I wonder why your doctor put you on Glucophage, because that's specifically what it treats, nothing else. In my case, I am insulin resistant, and this was causing my anovulatory cycles. I responded to the medication, having my first period in five years after the first month of use.

Your doctor will have to look for other alternatives for you. This is my opinion: Glucophage is a medication with strong side effects, you're not insulin resistant therefore it's not working for you, so why take it?

I'm going to take the liberty to recommend you a book: "What your doctor may not tell you about pre-menopause" by Dr. John Lee. I bet that at 23 you might thing pre-menopause is not a term that refers to you, but you'd be surprised how early women experience symptoms. I'm also young and was able to see myself in many of the cases they explain. Hope it gives you a bit more light regarding your situation.

sweetlanie, I've been on met since Sept, and I have not gotten AF yet either. You shouldn't give up yet! I've read that it can take long periods of time for some women... imagine, your body has been this way for a while, so the correction may not happen until an extended period of time has passed. I've also read in various places that 2000mg is the optimal theraputic dose of met for women with PCOS. Maybe you should get a second opinion from another RE to see if there is another way to approach your PCOS?

Ivystar, you don't necessarily have to test positive for insulin resistantance in order to take met for PCOS. I haven't, and there are a lot of other women on the boards who haven't either. I've been irregular/annovulatory my entire life, and with time, I am hopeful that met will work for me.

In general, just because met doesn't work immediately does NOT suggest that someone is pre-menopausal. If a period can be brought on with Progesterone, it indicates that sufficient estrogen is being produced and therefore the woman is not premenopausal. Additionally, if FSH levels are normal, it is indicative that there is an egg reserve in the ovaries.

Keep the faith, ladies! AF will show up for us at some point!

Before Metformin I got a period about every 2-3 YEARS! I am not IR and now I get a period every 35 days. I think it helps regardless of the IR or not. It did take a few months for me...so keep at it...Good luck!

Thanks for the replies! I sure hope it works...or at least that something works. I am seeing my RE the end of the month and I'm eager to find out what the next step is.
Who would have thought that one day I would be TRYING to get my period. When I was a teenager my period was like clockwork every month and I use to hate it...now I miss it- what irony.
I sure hope i'm not pre-menopausal at 23- good Lord!
My fsh levels were normal...I don't know what they were but I was told they were normal.
My new years resolution was to get a period, no matter what I have to do I am determined to get one! lol

I also fall under the same category of you people. I started met in november and no AF yet. I am wondering what is going on. I am not IR and i am thin. I am going to just keep taking met for couple of months and see if i get AF. I will be taking provera every 45 days to get my period. Hopefully Met will work for all of us. Good luck!!!!

I started taking Met at the end of November and NOTHING has happened either. I haven't even had really any side effects. I also haven't been diagnosid with IR. I also have NEVER had a period other than with BC pills or provera...and in those cases it is very short and very light. I've even taken clomid with no results. In fact, I more than liekly have NEVER O'd. I've had PCOS for about 12 years. Never even had AF as a teen. My doctors is running out of things to do!

I've been taking 1500mgs since the end of October with no results, and no side effects. I called my endo yesterday for approval to up the dosage to 2000mgs so hopefully this will help! I feel ill today from taking them, hopefully that is a sign things may finally be working.

I had been on met 2000mg for about 8-9 months, it worked at first got my af after about 2 months even lost some weight, BUT around sept. it stopped working for me, i went to see my re last week and she said that sometimes it happens were it just don't work, so she put me on AVANDAMET (which still has some met in it). and after taking it for only 2 days my af came back!! she said it would take a month to get in my system good, so i am hoping for the best,
