Does anyone know if you can take metformin with the pill?
My GP just keeps sending me to the specialist at my local hospital and last time i went to see her she only give me two options:
1) have fertility treatment
or
2) have a hystorectomy (not sure how to spell it)
Im 26 and not ready for children yet but would like them in the future!
I have since done some research myself and have found this site very helpful but still not sure if met and the pill can be taken together!
Any information would be great as i go back the hospital in a few hours and they want my decision on what i want to do!
Hi, I'm new here, and I just wanted to let you know, for what it's worth, I'm on Met & Yaz.
It seems to me that it's uncommon to be on both, but I'm not sure exactly why, except to guess that a lot of women don't get diagnosed with PCOS until they're TTC.
I was on both met and yasmin for 9 months. The combo helped me lose 50 lbs and regulated my cycles so that 4 months after coming off yasmin and only being on met I got pregnant. My dr said she usually takes that line of action with PCOS before resorting to fertility treatment. I will warn you though, I was VERY sick on the combo-don't think my body enjoyed the hormones from yasmin (though I've never done well on BCPs).

New too and I'm on both as of today. So we'll see how the combo goes.
My gyn is thinking to start me on the Metformin, and an IUD that has ... I think it was Provera in it. Reversible, I don't forget to take the pill, and I still have a birth control with hormones. Whoot. It's another option, albeit not typical.
I was prescribed Met and Yaz and took those for a few months. I had to make sure my spacing of them was right, otherwise it'd make me feel horrible. I think a reason you don't hear a lot about Met and BCPs is that a lot of dr.s rx Met for people TTC, so they obviously wouldn't want to be on BCPs.

I was on both - the pill for contraception, the Met to keep my blood sugars in line. (As an aside, I was on the pill for 16 years, had no IDEA that I had any issues, and when I went off to TTC, I had 2 "normal" ovulatory periods, and then. . . nothing. Except I put on 20 pounds in 1 1/2 months with NO change in diet or exercise.)
Met is NOT just for people TTCing. It is prescribed to people with IR or Type II diabetes. My late dad was on it in his 60s.

RUN, run as fast as you can, and find a new doc. Any doctor who recommends a hysterectomy AS A FIRST LINE RESPONSE should have her own reproductive organs yanked out. Through her nose. The theory that having a hysterectomy was a cure for all things that ailed women went out the medical door in the 70's and 80's. This is a serious, life-changing surgery, with major medical consequences. I'm just seething that she would have suggested it to you with no medical justification. I'm so sorry.

Just to throw my two cents in, I'm on BCP and met. I had been on the pill for 10 years and decided to have a break (ok, I ran out and was too busy to go to the dr to get a new prescription). Anyway, after that af stopped completely, my skin started seeping oil when it had previously been dry, and I packed on 15lbs in about 2 months. It took over 6 months to get a diagnosis (and in the meantime lots of moodswings, fatigue and a general feeling of disgusting-ness). I'm 28 and would like to have kids in the future too and feel bad for you, I think I would have keeled over in shock if the dr told me those were the only options. I agree with the previous poster, find a new dr. Good luck!
I was prescribed Met and BCP a few years ago, and more recently. It's definitely a routine thing. I would also run far away from that Dr. that recommended a hysterectomy.
...I should add it was against the advice of my Endo. I think she sees Metformin as a fertility treatment alone, and since she'd put me on Diane, she said it wouldn't make sense to also use the Metformin.
I had my family doctor prescribe the Metformin after the Doctor I see for my Laser Hair Removal suggested it (he's also a family practioner, specialized in costmetic medicine, yet very well versed in PCOS).
I admit I didn't tell my family doctor about my Endo's opinion. But I felt like I had my best interest in mind.
