Default Met & Pregnancy

I am 7 weeks pg after only 2 months of met!! I am pretty sure that I want to stay on met throughout to decrease my chances of GD. With that said I think I read somewhere that you need to stop taking met before surgery. When should I wean off in case I should need a c/s

Congrats on the BFP!

Just wanted to share some info on Met that I found while doing a little research. There might be another benefit of staying on Met during pregnancy.

Quote:
Although we do not yet have placebo-controlled trial data, our current clinical experiences suggests that pregnancy outcomes in women with PCOS are much better when Metformin is continued throughout the pregnancy than when Metformin is discontinued.
This is from Dr. Glueck's site. More info can be found at http://www.jewishhospitalcincinnati..../polycyst.html

Just scroll down to the bottom until you see the results of his past studies. Lots of interesting reading for both you and your dr.

Hi! Congrats on your pg! I also conceived quickly on Met, my DD. I stayed on 2000mg Met XR for the 1st trimester, then weaned off. At that time (2-3 yrs ago), my Dr said research shows there isn't much benefit being on met after 1st tri since the placenta takes over. Being on it for the 1st tri was to highly reduce chance of m/c.
You are right about having to be off met prior to surgery, as I recently had a minor surgery and I had to be off met 72 hrs prior. I think when I am pg again, I will do the same thing, just take met for 1st tri then wean off. Plus that way you don't have to deal with the side effects.

I'm staying on Met throughout my pg

Drs are ok with it

Its safe, but it is also only useful for people who have an insulin problem anyway.

I did get GD ... I have it now ... and am still on Met. I would have got GD sooner if I hadn't been on Met. Right now I am controlling it with Met and diet.

They think I will probably need insulin soon, but we're trying to stay off it, and we're trying to work hard so that I don't have diabetes after the baby comes.

BabyMajic

I really did not have many outward symptoms. Only the fact that I am overweight and very irregular periods or none at all for MONTHS!! I am IR and my u/s was "textbook" according to my RE. I did not think I was pg when I got my BFP. I just POAS because it was day 35 and that is what I had been doing while on Clomid and Provera. I was Clomid Resistant. I never got AF w/met just my BFP!!!!

Thanks so much for the link. It contained all the info I needed to know that my decision to stay on met is the right thing for me to do.

Congrats on the pregnancy!

I stayed on met my entire pregnancy. My IVF doc suggested it, and my high risk ob insisted on it.

I had a scheduled section on a Tuesday, and was told by my ob to take my last dose prior to surgery on the preceding Thursday night.

I didn't start back up on it right after the delivery - my doc wanted to see if I was one of the lucky ones who had an IR "honeymoon" period after delivery. My levels were good, but I ended up going back on the Met anyway after a few weeks, as my milk production sucked (ha, ha). I noticed a dramatic jump in quantity after getting back up to 1/2 my previous dosage, and another jump when I ramped up to my full dose.

HTH,

ann

I got preg just months after starting met too! I stayed on met (1,000 mg twice a day) my whole preg. IMO the benefits grossly out weigh any risks. I was able to keep GD away. In the past I've had issues with early miscarriage so I really wanted to continue met during my preg. I had a c/s due to Vasa Previa and there was no need for me to get off the met prior to my c/s. I was seen by high risk docs from an excellent teaching hospital so I trust they knew what they were doing I am still on met now while BFing.

Good luck and here's to a H&H 9mos for ya!! YAH metformin!!!
