Your Dr really shouldn't have given you a timeline..because side effects vary from person to person. And so many factors affect side effects...your body's sensitivity to medicine, your circulating insulin levels and your diet to name a few.
If you want to help yourself out a lot, try moderating your carbs. Carbs cause a rise in insulin and circulating insulin can make us on met feel really lousy. I continued to have s/e several times a week for a year on met because I was too stubborn to change my diet. When I started low carbing after a year, my side effects became very rare and I'm so glad I did.
Can you talk to your Dr about dosing up a little more slowly? A lot of people have better experience when they let their body settle into the new dose and don't dose up too fast. Ask your Dr if he is willing to let you dose up after your body tolerates your previous dose well.
For most people who moderate their insulin/carbs, the side effects do pass once your body is used to the medicine. I hope you get feeling better soon.
