I had never spotted before until I started taking Met. I think that it is just our bodies way of figuring out what it needs to do. It is hard to classify spotting as a period, but from what I have read on other threads that 2-3 days of spotting is considered a period. I was like you, it wasn't until the second month that I began spotting. As the doctors say it takes a while for the met to begin working with your body, esp if you are on a lower dosage like myself. I think the time window is 3-6 months. Best of luck! I completely understand your frustration and will pray for a normal visit from AF!
