Is the Met working? Hi everyone! I was diagnosed with PCOS because of high free testosterone and some symptoms (mild facial hair, extreme weight gain and difficultly losing, and acne). I did not have any PCOS signs on my ultrasound. My doctor made the diagnosis and started me on Metformin (1500mg) in May of 2009.
I had a rough time with the Met for the first month or so, but I seem to be adjusting even though every now and then I still feel crummy. I'm really frustrated because even though I have cut my food intake drastically, the scale is not budging! I'm going to the gym about twice a week (I'd like to go more but I just seem to be really tired plus its hard to get motivated when you aren't seeing any results).
I talked to my general practice doctor (she was the one who first suspected PCOS) and expressed my frustration last week. She told me that it is common for women with PCOS to not lose the weight until around their 6th month on meds. She said that my body is essentially in starvation mode (partly because of the decrease in calories and partly because of the horomones fluxuating) and it takes about 6 months for everything to adjust. Has anyone else heard anything like this?
I'm really frustrated!!! We are TTC and I would really like to take some weight off to feel better and hopefully to be more successful at conceiving. I was starting to wonder if the Met was working at all, but I have noticed a couple of changes. My skin has seemed to clear up quite a bit. I also have noticed a change in my sex drive. I didn't even realize it, but I used to have a pretty strong sex drive. Since starting the Met I have noticed a significant decrease in that area. I can't really say that is a good thing, but maybe it is at least a sign that the Met is working.
