Default Met XR dosing and anxiety

I could use some advice… I have been taking 2000 mg/day of Fortamet (metformin XR) with my evening meals and experiencing a lot of the following anxiety symptoms that seem to be most noticeable, oddly enough, late in the evenings and into the night: chest pain, shortness of breath, insomnia, night sweats and stomach upset.

Two weeks ago, I happened to look at the label on my prescription bottle. Contrary to what I have read online about taking metformin XR all at once, the dosage instructions on my bottle said to take one tablet by mouth twice daily. And, after doing so, the anxiety symptoms I mentioned before all but disappeared within a few days!

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm also wondering if I'd have even fewer side effects by switching to non-XR metformin, since I am now taking XR at two different times of the day, anyway. Any suggestions, anyone? Thanks!
