Hey everyone...my brother (23 yrs.) just had some lab work done and they found he has an elevated estrogen level. We believe he has gynocomastia (female looking male breasts) because diet and exercise have NOT reduced his breast tissue. He's making an appointment to see the same endo that our mom and I see--mom has a tumor on her pituitary gland and I obviously have PCOS. :p Looks like endocrine probs. run in the family....
I remember reading something about metabolic syndromes in men that are almost like PCOS but I can't find anything about it. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance

Syndrome X is PCOS w/o taking the infertility into the equation. So men can have that.
Has he had his insulin checked? That can screw ALL hormones up, even in men. Hope you guys find some answers!

I think a friend of mine may have the male PCOS. At age 28, he went from full head hair at age 21 to about a Norwood 3-4 now, and is REALLY overweight at the same time. Makes you wonder.

Dad was the endocrine special person who I got my PCOS from. He developed diabetes and couldn't lose weight on any diet. He died at age 45 of estrogen positive breast cancer (made the doctors wonder what went on). They finaly figured out that he was turning his testosterone into estrogen and it was wreaking havock on his body. Unlike pcos, the SHBG levels are increased and I remember reading somewhere that it plays a part in developing breast cancer. I guess what I am trying to spit out is make sure your brother does a monthly self breast exam. It may be a little bit odd but its better than dying. Other than that they do label it as syndrome x- too bad they never caught it in my dad. Good luck!

Hi everyone, just wanted to give a little update...well, my brother did end up seeing the endo, who (of course) thought the hormone levels were elevated b/c of his weight...but he did do a more extensive lab work-up than my brother's primary doctor did. Come to find out, the labs showed low testosterone and high estrogen, even after they factored in his weight. So, he went for an MRI of his pituitary this week (mom has a benign tumor on hers) and we're awaiting results.

That is VERY interesting. Ive never thought about it before, but have noticed some men have small 'breasts'. I never thought about relating it to a PCOS sort of problem. Im sure it can happen, sounds just the opposite hormone imbalances.
I hope lots of luck for your brother and your family. Keep us updated. Id like to definitely hear about it.

Thanks...the weird thing is, his chest doesn't look manly...they almost look like a young girls developing boobs...the way mine did when they were starting...they look nothing like other men's chests. It's not just the fatty tissue that's there, it's also the structure of the nipple area...

Jen.. first im so sorry to hear about this. My son also is showing signs of the same exact things and he's 12. He's a big boy by nature, 5'8 and 180 and in the past year he has started uh... blossoming. He went to the doc two months ago who said it was gynocomastia. They are giving him one year to lose some weight, they dont think he needs to lose more than about 20 pounds or so, to see if some of the mass goes away from his breasts. Im not optimistic because as you said, the shape of them are like a teenage girl's and the nipple's are starting to develop more like a woman's. If nothing changes in the next year they want to go ahead and perform surgery to remove the breast tissue. Im not sure if its like a mastectomy or if its liposuction-esque, we havent gotten that far yet. He's VERY young to do either as I see it, and with all the research that I've done in the past two months there is a lot of information out there saying that this stuff works itself out in the teens.. BUT, theres always a but isnt there, his are considered "extreme". Sigh. So I'm getting him to an endo to see whats going on hormonally.
Needless to say, this is tremendously stressful for my little man.. poor thing is so self concious about his "man boobs" as he calls them. He cant take off his shirt at the beach, he doesnt know what in the world to do with them.. its a mess. The doc is very aware of this, he said that they have started going the surgical route on the extreme cases earlier than they have in the past because of the psychological ramifications of young boys having breasts. Luckily, insurance will cover the whole thing.
Again, Im so sorry that your brother is going through this. I will keeping him in my thoughts and checking back in here to hear any news.

Arma--thanks for your reply...my brother was around your son's age when it started, but he was a "big boy" too and the dr's just chalked it up to weight gain. Currently, he's 23, 6'3" and about 350 pounds, with the weight mostly in his gut area. He has BROAD shoulders, like a linebacker! I am SO GLAD that your son's dr's are taking this so seriously NOW, instead of waiting until he's older. My brother was teased and made to feel uncomfortable with himself. Even when my brother was working long days with my dad (we have a sawmill) and on the football team, he still had the boobs. Good luck to you and your son as you embark on this journey--I hope it goes as smoothly as possible!
PS. I just read the part about things working themselves out in the teen years...yeah, right...*rolls eyes*

MY BROTHER IS ON CLOMID!!!!! I can't believe it! It cracks me up knowing that I might have to take it some day to get PG and he's taking it to block his extra estrogen!!!
The MRI came out fine, thank God, except the dr. saw a polyp on his sinuses...go figure. But everything with his pituitary is normal...so that lead to the Clomid Rx. I read the package insert, all very interesting.
It's so weird, I have extra male hormones, he has extra female hormones...can't we just switch blood or something?
