I just started taking Metaformin on 8/28 and too scared to drink alcohol with it for fear of the GI consequences. Anybody got any advice, cause I sure could use a cocktail !
I started out at 500 mg 2 weeks ago and moved up to 1500 mg/day today. I haven't had any side effects and I have a glass of red wine with dinner most nights. OK, last night I had 2
Maybe give it a few days to see if you are one of the unlucky 30% with GI effects before adding a known trigger.

Metformin 1500mg
Cycle 1: Clomid (50) CD 2-6, no O? EWCM, but temps off
Cycle 2: Clomid (50) CD 5-9, no O? EWCM, but temps off again. missing progesterone? Will be using NPC next time.
Cycle 3: Clomid 100mg CD 5-9, Looks like O around CD19/21. Started NPC 2 days later.
Calcium w/Vit D & Mg, Cinnamon, prenatal, Vitamin B complex, Triple Omega, Cranberry, Chiral Balance DCI
I drink all the time and have not noticed any GI effects that evening or the following day. I AM one of the 30% that does get some GI problems, but of all things, mine are worse after eating chicken. Unfortunately chicken is something I eat often so I just deal with it.

Just in case - I would be careful about drinking a lot on metformin....
This is from webmd.com. If you search for metformin it will display:
Avoid excessive alcohol intake while taking metformin. Together, alcohol and metformin may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia.
A small number of people who have taken metformin have developed a serious condition called lactic acidosis that has been fatal in up to 50% of cases. Lactic acidosis has occurred most often in people whose kidneys were not working properly. Liver problems may also increase the risk of developing lactic acidosis. Stop taking metformin and call your doctor immediately if you experience a feeling of general discomfort or sickness; weakness; sore or aching muscles; trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness; unusual or unexplained stomach upset (after the initial stomach upset that may occur at the start of therapy with metformin); or the sudden development of a slow or irregular heartbeat. These may be signs of lactic acidosis.
I drink beer a few days out the week and I have not noticed any side effects from drinking. So I know a Cocktail won't hurt!

"The things impossible for people are possible for God" Luke 18:27
I noticed one evening after having 2 very large glasses of wine with dinner that I woke later that night and the room was spinning like I'd been doing shots all night!
No idea if it had anything to do with the Met or if I didn't eat enough or what. So I just take it easy and no more than 1 or 2 normal sized drinks.
Of course I should preface all this with I've had some hypoglycemia issues with Met. So it goes hand in hand with what Carolina said above.

I typically am a non-drinker. But these GI side effects lately drove me to 2 drinks last weekend after being on 1500mg for nearly 2 weeks, and I swear I've never felt better that night or the next day. How backwards. I think one here or there can't be too bad but do be aware of the risk of lactic acidosis.
