Default Metal taste in mouth

Have any of you cysters on metformin ever had a taste of metal in your mouth. I had it all day and I just kept popping mints in my mouth because it was making my stomach upset.

Just wondering if this could be a side affect of the met.

Actually yes that is one of the effects of taking metformin. I stopped taking it because of that. I couldn't handle feeling like i'd been sucking on a penny all day long.

LOL, I told my husband I felt like I was licking ice off a metal spoon. EWWWWWW.

So far it has only happened one time, but it was for a good part of the day. I wonder if it could happen depending on the food you eat.

I have to use plastic spoons a forks alot (especially with ice cream) because I can not stand the taste of metal in my mouth. Some of my filling are metal and I recently had 1 changed to the white porclin (sorry I don't know if i spelled that correctly) and this has happened even before I was taking met.

Since you mention an upset stomach, it's possible it's acid reflux. I think I read that Met can exacerbate this. Bitter/metal taste in the mouth is one of the symptoms I've experienced with acid reflux; it's due to your stomach acid creeping up your esophagus. In any case, peppermint makes it worse because it relaxes the esphogeal sphincter. Try popping tums instead of mints and seeing if that helps...

Yup, it sure is. I hated it...made everything taste awful. It went away after a month or two on the met though and I haven't had any problems since.

Good luck!
