Default metformin

Hello Everyone-
First i would like to thank everyone for sharing becuase for someone who's knew it good to have wonderful people thing You all. i just found out the i have PCOS and Syndrome X. i was put of metformin and i had an bad reaction. Cold sweats, extreme dizziness, headache, nausea, dyahrea, and blacking out. My husband took me in to urgent care and they checked me blood for acid. there wasn't any=) later my doctor told me that i wasn't allergic, but had a high resistance to the metformin. He wanted me to cut the pills in half and take them that way for a week, to build up slower than before. Has this happened to anyone else and if so what became of it?

I don't know what dose your doctor had you start out with, but with Metformin you need to always start out with a low dose and then slowly go higher as your body adjusts. Your doctor should have told you that though.

Check out the Metformin FAQ sticky at the top of the Metformin board. You'll find some really good information there.

From what I understand nausea and dizzyness are very common in the first few weeks of met. These side effects are supposed to subside once your body adjusts to the meds but...

When you went back to the doctor did they do a blood test to check your liver function? The reason I am asking is that I was taking 1000mg (far less than most Cysters) and had to stop taking it because it was damaging my liver. I had a very exterme reaction like you. I was starting to feel results from taking it, so I asked if I could try a lower dosage. My Dr. said no b/c if it's harmful in a larger dosage, it's going to still be harmful in a smaller quantity, just not as much.

I am now taking Provera/ Clomid without the met, so don't be discouraged if you can't take it. Just giving you a question to ask your Dr.

Hey there,

I had stopped my met. in August because of surgery, and I had worked my way up to 2000 mgs a day. I just saw my doctor last week and she put me on that level again. I have never been so sick, I was tired, depressed, naseous, etc. I called my doctor and she told me to stop taking it for a few days and then to take 500 mgx2 daily and work back up to 2000 mg. Met. is a very potent drug and it takes a while for the body to get used to its effects. Apparently it is worth trying to get used to it b/c it helps with PCOS. I have found that I can't cut out carbs right now because I have no energy and I think my seretonin levels go down so I get depressed but after a few weeks, I will cut down on the carbs again and that worked for me last time. Hope you feel better on the lower dosage and just give it some time.

CEC- thank you for your answer. Does metformin cause depression? i hadn't read anything about that? i hope that you feel better soon. i seem to be doing fine on the lower dose, but come Monday i have to go back to 500mg. After that i'm not sure if my doctor wants me to go to 1000 or 750.

I haven't heard anything of Met causing depression. On the opposite, for me it pulled me out of a slump I had resigned myself to and I felt better than I had in a very long time.

When you go up to 500mg, you may want to try taking 250 in the morning and 250 at night (space them 12 hours apart as best you can for maximum benefit) so it'll still be easy on your stomach.

Hey ladies,

I am not an expert in the field of met. nor depression, but if you read other posts in this forum and other places, people report feeling down when they are on met in the beg. All I know is that during the few days I was off metformin, I had all this energy and was my bubbly self and the past few days being on met, I cry at least five times a day and I have extreme fatigue. I think like everything out there, it's a very personal reaction, some people metabolize meds differently and that is a proven fact.

CEC414-
i know what you mean. i was now met for 5 days before i had mine bad reaction and had to stop. i felt great for the two day i was off of it. Now that i am on a loser dose i have less side effects, but still feel tired and a bit down too. Oh course it may have nothing to do with the met. i just don't know.

I just started it last night......one pill a day for a few days, working up to two and finally three a day, all taken with meals.

I think I was down before I started it, but again, I only have one dose in my system.

They did tell me the most common side effect was upper GI problems (diarrhea) and believe me, that hit me first thing this morning......but hey, I lost 2 lbs already so I am extremely happy. LOL
