Default Metformin

Hi, Ladies
My Name is Dawn I'm 38 reside in NJ, I was just informed by my OB/ that I have PCOS, He was kind enough to advise me over the phone after 2 weeks trying to tract him down to give me answers to "why" I been terrible for 3 long years. He told me I have PCOS, and not to worry about it because I had no interest to have any more children. Well, he was correct about that. How about the 90 pd of excess weight and hair and acne that has been forming and the trip to the Er for heart Palpatations. He said "take Metformin and watch the weight fall off" and hung up. WELL, I cried for 2 hours. I took the metfromin and I will say it has decreased my cravings, however I still see Acne and lots of it. It is bothersome.
here are a few Questions I how you ladies will help me.

I am in the process of a new OB, and I'm scheduled to see Endo on the 31st.

Can I increase the metformin to 3x a day? I'm taking 1,000 500 in the morning and the other at dinner. along with Zoloft for the depression. I wish not to call the OB back and my Family Dr wants nothing to do with my increases in meds.

what should I stay away from such as food, drinks?

Is there anything I can use o clear this acne? ANYTHING? there not just pimples, like cyst.

and does nayone from NJ know of Dr that deal with PCOS.?

Thank you,

Dawn

I wouldn't increase you meds without the advise of a Dr. I use neutrogenas daily acne wash everyday it works good for me, I still have breakouts but not as bad.

Default Metformin

Hi Dawn,
I am sorry to hear that your Dr. didn't have time for you. It took me almost 3 mos. to see my doc but it was worth the wait. I just started the Met 1500 mg. on 12/27/06. He had me build up to the 500mg 3 times a day. He also suggested the South Beach Diet or Weight Watchers. The only thing that he cautioned me about with Weight Watchers was not to save up my points and use them, all at once. He said be careful not to let my sugar drop to low on the Met. I am not diabetic officially just borderline. I have not weighed myself yet. I will on the 27th- want to wait a month to see.how much I have lost. The first thing the Met did was clear my face up!! I was amazed about that. I am 36 yrs. old and my face was looking worse than it did when, I was a teenager! Give the Met a chance to work. I am willing to give a shot! Anything is worth not feeling so miserable anymore! I am not TTC anymore, either. PCOS is just getting worse now. Good luck finding a doc! 2 wks. is too long to wait for a call back! I would be frustrated too! Keep posted on how you are doing on your Met. We are only a couple of weeks apart on this Met journey!

I would recommend you wait to see your endo before upping your dose. When i was first diagnosed, i had to work my self up from only 500mg of met. I was also recommended a 40-30-30 diet like The Zone. I know that if i break my diet and eat too much carbs makes me feel sick but overall following my diet, side effects were not a problem. As far as the acne, i did notice an improvement once the met started working. Best wishes! and Welcome to the board

Welcome new cysters!

Wow. I'm glad you're planning to see a new doc. As if PCOS is only a concern if you want to conceive.

I wish you all the best on the met. It was wonderful for me. I would discuss it with your new doc before bumping up the dose. I found that a low-carb diet worked best for me along with the met.

I don't know if you've checked it out yet but there is a Find A Doctor forum here, maybe another cyster will be able to recommend a doctor in your area.

Hope this helps!
Hugs
Jenny

Hey Dawn,

I'm from NYC and there are Doctor's I can recommend in the city. Dr. Redmond and Dr. Futterweit. Both are endocrinologists (and neither take insurance). These are the guys that write the books. Not sure where in Jersey you are, but I would recommend going into Manhattan, at least for an initial consultation. Dr. Redmond's website is http://www.hormonehelpny.com/ . You can google Dr. Walter Futterweit.

I know there is an excellent fertility clinic somewhere in NJ (I can try to find out for you) that supposedly treats people with PCOS if you can't make it into the city.

I'm a patient of Dr. Redmond's (have actually only just begun this process) and so far so good. He seems to be very knowledgable. If you can get into Manhattan, it's worth checking out. We're so lucky to have some of the best in the field close by!

Good luck!!!
