Question Metformin

has anyone out there been prescribed metformin and hasn't been ttc? I have been referred to a gynacologist that i know will prescribe met but now i have heard that it is only if i am ttc! Is this true?

I was prescribed Metformin in January by my GP for weight control. I told her that I thought that only Consultants could do this and she said that as I am diagnosed with PCOS and she has read about Metformin's effectiveness she was more than happy to prescribe it. I am taking it for 3 months to see how I go on and I have lost over a stone since January 28th! So it looks as though it is working.

hiya princess, well I've been on metformin since may and am not ttcing, so it shouldnt make any difference. Maybe it depends on the specialist you see-just go prepared with loads of info, lay it on thick about being desperate to at least give the met a go,and good luck!

Hiya!

Neither of my consultants would prescribe met. for me, one because he'd never heard of it (!) and the other because I wasn't ttc, and she said I was fat because I was overeating, and if I could lose weight on my own then I could maybe have met.

I've since bought my own, and I lost 3 pounds this week! (started 2 weeks ago)

Just want to put my 2 cents in :

1) Metformin CAN be prescribed even if you're not ttc. I think it has to come from a consultant originally, but your GP can prescribe it afterwards.

2) Metformin is NOT a weight loss drug! All it does is control insulin levels so that you are better able to break down blood sugar. If this causes you to lose weight, then great. But sometimes it's not the answer.

I hate that doctors don't know about this drug. What kind of a poor excuse is that? I only hope that women with PCOS come to this site and realise that they can get some help!

Luv,
Dani

My GP said that she COULD prescribe it beacause as GP she is autonomous and provided she can justify a prescription ie has done her reading/research then she can do it (unless of course the drug is mega expensive!). Sorry if I misled anyone about my weight control - Iknow that Met is not a weight loss drug but as I am IR it was worth a shot as NOTHING else worked and as I said I am on a 3 month trial. I am watching my carb intake which is helping but I did this before the Met to no avail! Good luck to anyone trying to get it.

A couple of people said they "bought their own" metaformin. Isn't it only available through a prescription?

How do you get it on your own?

Hiya! Got mine from http://www.anagen.net/prices.htm

It's really cheap too, $34 (£17) for 500@500mg. Delivery is free and takes about a fortnight.
