my doc said it was possible that i have pcos. i've been ttc for years with no luck. doc put me on this pill and said i should start having a period again... my question is how long to u have to be on the pill and when should i expect my first cycle does it take weeks? months? thank u!!!
It's really hard to tell what Met will do for the individual body. You may have more luck getting answers if you take this post to the Metformin forum!
I started on metformin in August of 2001...and my first period arrived in October, so it was 3 months for me. But despite the delay in my body's response to this drug (1 year before i started REALLY seeing drastic results), this drug is a MIRACLE. Be patient and all the very best!

Hi there...
Everyone is different, but metformin gave me my first period after taking it only 2 months. It had been well over a year since I had had one, and I could not feel any cyclical changes going on in my body during that time. The metformin brought all of my levels back into the very normal range, including insulin and glucose, hormones, and triglycerides. Whew. Everything felt like it was working better than it ever had. I had a second period only 35 days later (my shortest month in my entire life!), but then it stalled. Back to the old me. Spotting and weirdness. We'll see what happens, but I've only been taking it for 5 months.
It's worth a try, in my opinion, because it can help us get our insulin under control and avoid becoming diabetic ( I hope!).
Best wishes,
Sheri

Sheri, I had some weird cycles and reverted back to some weirdness after starting Met too. My doctors acted as though this was unusual and hinted that perhaps the drug wasn't working, but after 18 months people keep coming up to me and saying how different I look. I look like I did 10 years ago, so it may take longer than the doctors think for the results to be drastic. Hang in there!
Also: if you happen to be on a drug nicknamed Spiro for hair growth, it wreaks havok with your periods. I discontinued it for that reason.
Good luck!

Christy,
Thanks for the info... I'm trying to be patient. The whole insulin thing scared the cr*p out of me, so I'm also changing my eating habits. Hard to do... especially being a pastry chef!
So far, I haven't needed any extra hair, so I haven't taken meds for that. I have some on my chin that I'd be willing to give you (wink).
Finding the right dose of metformin might take a while, and I hope to help the situation by exercising more.
Best wishes to all,
Sheri
I have been on the same dosage since July 2001, and I have still had times where it appears not to be working as well. Be patient..your body will adjust.
