Default Metformin and Acne

Hi Ladies....does anyone know if Metformin can help with acne?

I went to my gynacologist today and finally saw someone who believed that i have PCOS and not just cysts on my ovaries with a bit of bad skin! Joy of joys!

So i told her i was trying to conceive (although i am not strictly trying) in order to get some help as my previous doctor seemed to think going back on the pill was my only option. I have bad acne i think brought on my bcp in the first place so i refused. Anyway....i stupidly told her i was on Trimethoprim (antibiotic) for the acne and she then told me that i cant go on Metformin incase i get pregnant as it can cause birth defects because of the antibiotic.

So she suggested using a Progestogen to induce a withdrawal bleed once every 3 months and sticking with the antibiotic to see if it clears my skin before trying to conceive. I really really do not want to put any more synthetic hormones in my body and was wondering if i go on Metformin is it likely to have an addes bonus of clearing my skin. Does it balance hormones?

I am considering going back and demanding Metformin and making sure i am VERY careful with contraception (condoms). Does anyone have any postive experience with Metformin and Acne? I am not overweight and as far as i know have no insulin problems.

Any input would be appreciated!
Thanks
Jessica.

Default Metformin and Acne

I'm pretty new at this but this is what my doctor has told me so far. He said that Metformin is used to balance out the Testosterone overages in the body. Those testoterone overages are the cause of a number of things including skin problems. Metformin should address it. Go back to the doctor, be open and honest with them about what you need because in my opinion making unexplained demands would only complicate things. Tell them that you've read about Metformin and that you're willing to put "trying" plans on hold while you get a handle on this problem. I hope this helped, good luck!!

HI

Thanks for the reply. I was told metformin deals with the insulin issue as it is a drug primarily for diabetics? I am so confused! My testosterone levels came back normal from the blood test but am not sure how accurate blood tests are with regards to testosterone?

I thnk i will go see doctor tomorrow and cross my fingers that i get one that knows what they are talking about?

Thanks for your input anyway.....i am going to need to research this drug a little more before tomorrow i think.

Jessica.

My doctor did say it is a drug primarily for diabetics, and he assured me that I'm not diabetic but the Met addresses the Insulin Resistance. Yes, research is a good thing, so you can prepare any questions you want to ask your doctor..good luck!

By the way, you can take Metformin while trying to get pregnant (it is a drug that helps many people ovulate) and you can take Metformin while pregnant and many many women take it during pregnancy to prevent miscarriage and gestational diabetes.

Thanks for all your info girls...i feel like i am going insane at the moment looking every little thing up online! I even had a dream last night that i had alopecia as a result of this syndrome! I think i may need to lay off the research for a few days!

I took the plunge and asked my doctor to prescribe me metformin. I have been taking it 4 days, 500mg once a day. Am tolerating it pretty well with only mild feelings of nausea sometimes so i think i will up it to 2 tablets a day (1000mg) after a week as suggested by my doctor.

I actually started to get ovulation symptoms the day before i went to my doctor (slippery CM, sore boobs) so perhaps something was about to happen this month anyway. Oh and my temps have been 0.2 degrees celsius higher the last 3 days but still pretty low at 36.4 (i think thats low?) The O Symptoms started on day 82 of my cycle but surely that doesnt mean i will have to wait another 80 days to bleed?! Does anyone know if you can get slippery CM without ovulation? I am thinking it may be just a sign that i am about to bleed. I hope it happens soon as i really dont want to have to take progestins to induce it.

Thank you everyone for your invaluable information it really does help keep me sane!

Hugs
Jessica.
