Metformin & Adipex taking together - Need feedback
Hello -- I am new to this board, I was diagnosed 2 months ago with IR. I'm trying to educate my self on being IR but also, my Dr. put me on Metformin and Adipex-P and I was just wondering if anyone else is taking both and any side effects you are experiencing with the the two combined. Any feedback is appreciated!
Hey. I'm on both. Adipex is 37.5mg a day and Met is 2000mg a day.
With or without Adipex, Met can cause some stomach problems...but nothing major.
Met ONLY causes me problems if I skip two or more days and go back on it all at once or if I don't take it with food.
It causes intestinal distress - my tummy gurgles, makes me nauseous, etc.
So, forgetting all other medicines for a second - follow two rules with Met:
1) DON'T skip days. (And DON'T give up - Met sucks for two weeks or so - but gets better. Once your at your total dose - it takes a while for your body to get used to the meds - but your body will forget all about it in 24 hours...so make SURE you take it every day!)
2) You HAVE to eat WHEN you take the Met. I've had the best results eating half of my meal, taking the pills, then eating the other half of my meal. (Some women also say they do better to take 1/2 of your dose in the AM and 1/2 in the PM...but since they are 24 time released, I don' t notice any difference.) Take it without food though, or too far before/after a meal...yuuuck. You'll feel soooo sick.
Ok, now on to Adipex.
I started taking in 2 1/2 weeks ago and LOVE it. I notice no interaction with Met (even if I forget Met for a day - see above - baaaad idea )
I have the drymouth (there's one way of forcing your H20 intake!), but its not so bad - and totally worth the weight loss.
I also had the jitters for about 9 days, now I feel more energy, but not jitters.
I take it early enough to make sure I can fall alseep at night.
And I have to FORCE myself to eat. I either am not hungry at ALL or I am all of a sudden sick to my stomach and lightheaded from not eating.
So just remember two things about Adipex:
1) DRINK a LOT of water. (It's good for you anyway, but cuts down on the drymouth)
2) Work out a meal plan and stick to it. (FORCE yourself to eat...your body will shut down fat loss anyway if you don't, but then your stomach is used to that amount of food when you come off Adipex so if you stick to it you won't gain all the weight back.)
I noticed with the Met that it was easy to maintain my weight - but I only lost VERY slowly - a pound every two-three weeks *bleh*.
But with the Adipex - I've lost 11lbs in 15 days. (WHOOOHOOOO!)
FWIW - I exercise every day. I'm at the gym for at least an hour a day - Spinning classes + Sauna most days, or Elliptical, Sauna and Core exercises the other days. I've done this for years so its just habit now.
And I am on the South Beach Diet - very easy for me to follow and I love the food and recipes....I try at least two new recipes each week. I've done this for almost a year now and, again, its habit - the smell of fast food makes me nauseous now.
I hope this helps!
Take care & Good luck
~Mary
