Default Metformin and Alcohol

Just curious, I'm new to Met, been taking 500mg since Christmas, and doc just bumped me up to 2000mg. I'm just taking 1000mg now to increase slowly due to the s/e's. I'm going to the casinos for two days and might like to have a little mixed drink while I"m there. Am I playing with fire? I usually do not drink any alcohol at all, so should I even risk it? Or is one drink ok? Any feedback from my veteran cysters would be appreciated! Thanks and much love!

I personally tend to stay away from alcohol now. Alcohol affects me a lot quicker now than it used to - like before Met, I used to be able to take 4/5 shots of tequila (ick...just the thought of it makes me sick lol) but now, I can barely have a mixed drink without feeling completely drunk and uncomfortable - last week I tried to drink a Mike's Hard (same alcohol content as a beer) but I couldn't finish it because I was already feeling tipsy before the end of my drink! Not only tipsy, but dizzy and nauseous as well. I don't know if that happens to everyone but it did to me...that was the first drink I tried to have in over a year! lol. Oh and I'm also on 2,000mg a day.

I know if you do drink a lot in one night while on Metformin, it can be really dangerous to your health. One mixed drink should be okay, as long as it doesn't turn into a habit and it's not a lot in one day either. I think once in a while is okay, just take it slow and see what you can handle Have fun at the casinos!!

Yes, drinking with Met should be done very carefully if at all. My doctor said that one or two drinks was OK every once and a while. I find that really just one drink is all I need these days to feel buzzed. It really is funny... I never was great at drinking a ton but I did have some tolerance-- I could drink 4/5 drinks and then be buzzed vs. 1 now. Ideally you shouldn't drink anything with Met since it overworks your liver and you have a higher risk of lactic acidosis... but I love having my one glass of wine, mixed drink, beer etc....

I still drink a couple glasses of wine once or twice a week, but i've definately noticed the drop in my alcohol tolerance... after 2 beers the other night I was hanging off of DH looking a fool... guess I'll stick to the white merlot at home! :-D
