Question Metformin and alcohol???

Does anyone has any ideas about drinking while taking metformin? It says on the bottle do not take with alcohol, but I have a wedding to go to in April, and I'd love to have some cocktails.

Thank you

Katy

I have been on met for over a year now. I am not a big drinker at all but I did notice that when I do I get drunk verrrrry quickly. Like one to two drinks. I also noticed that the next day I have no energy at all. I sleep wake up for about an hour then go back to sleep. I read somewhere that alcohol and met can cause hypoglycemic symptoms. I also read that it is not safe for your liver and kidneys. Some recommend not taking your meds before or after you plan on drinking.
Hope this helps alittle

I think it's really hard on your liver to drink on met, and I find when i do, i get diahrrea. So i usually drink very seldom on met....usually 1 to 2 drinks a month.

I am on a high dose (2550mg)- so I make it my policy to refrain from alcohol.

It might sound silly, but my motto is:

This is from webmd.com. If you search for metformin it will display:

Avoid excessive alcohol intake while taking metformin. Together, alcohol and metformin may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia.

A small number of people who have taken metformin have developed a serious condition called lactic acidosis that has been fatal in up to 50% of cases. Lactic acidosis has occurred most often in people whose kidneys were not working properly. Liver problems may also increase the risk of developing lactic acidosis. Stop taking metformin and call your doctor immediately if you experience a feeling of general discomfort or sickness; weakness; sore or aching muscles; trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness; unusual or unexplained stomach upset (after the initial stomach upset that may occur at the start of therapy with metformin); or the sudden development of a slow or irregular heartbeat. These may be signs of lactic acidosis.

I've stayed away from alcohol since I've been on it. It's been hard since all my friends are big drinkers. I'd rather not chance it though.

I recently turned 21 and of course, had to celebrate accordingly. However, when I heard about it not being the best to mix alcohol and met, I stopped taking met on wednesday evening (usually one every AM and PM) in order to go out fri nite. I had a fairly large amount of alcohol and I was fine (except for the effects of the alcohol - which, might I add, were very fun, since I didn't get sick or hungover!!!).
HOWEVER, I resumed my met on Sun evening and monday evening, I had ONE mixed drink (very small amount of alcohol, in comparison with the previous few days) and I was feeling it. I didn't get sick, but I had horribly violent stomach cramps (I guess???) and diarrhea for a few days. So, my new rule is stop met at least 48 hours in advance and don't mix at all!!!
Hope I was able to help and have fun at the wedding & reception (but not TOO much fun!!!)

Katy,
I've always been a cheap date, but I think I'm almost free now. After a small glass of wine, woo-hoo, party of one! I haven't been drinking much at all since starting the medicine, but when I do, I don't even want very much. A couple of drinks is plenty for a fun evening, and I haven't seen any side effects. Watch my liver fall out or something. That'll teach me. Can't a cyster have any fun?
Have a blast at the wedding, but the advice of stopping meds 48 hours ahead might be good to heed.
Sheri

Since I've been on Met (almost a month now) my desire to drink has almost gone away. It just doesn't even sound appealing. And beforehand, I loved a good glass of wine or vodka tonic ( or two, or three). I think I'm also nervous that it will make me really sick. I do have a glass of red wine every once in a while and champagne seems to be the only thing that I have had more than one of and didn't feel sick during or afterwards.
I read somewhere that if you are going to drink, at least choose low sugar options.

When I first started met back in july I was vomiting after one glass of wine. Up until halloween I hadn't had a drink since...halloween I only took my morning dose (500mg) and skipped the other 1000mg..that night I was able to drink one vodka cranberry with no ill effects. Mostly though, booze just isn't worth it to me anymore.
