My girlfriend (25) started taking Metformin 11 days ago for PCOS. Last night she consumed what she referred to as "2 sips" of beer out of a friend's drink. This morning she woke up with some obvious signs swelling on her face but no other symtoms. It looked very similar to the alergic reaction I had to antibiotics. I understand that you are not supposed to consume large amounts of alcohol (preferably none) with metformin. But does this reaction seem more severe than usual for a very small amount of alcohol? Should she stop metformin and call the doctor or just wait it out and not consume any alcohol in the future?

I know it's been a couple months since your post but I just got diagnosed and am taking one 500mg dose a day. I had about two large drinks last night (enough to feel more than tipsy on the meds) and today I haven't really noticed anything. I felt a little dizzy earlier but other than that I'm fine.

I hope she ended up figuring it all out and thanks for posting because that is kind of scary and does seem like an extreme case.
