Hello people. Diagnosed with PCOS 2 years or so ago. Was prescribed Metformin 3 months ago, but didn't have the guts to take it. I suffer with depression and anxiety attacks, and had been taking cipramil(anti depressant). Every time I come off the them, I get low again, so have to go back on.
My question is, if I take the Met, will this help with the depression, or do I need to take the anti depressants also?
Only got my blood test results back(after 4 months)at the hospital appt last week, and all they told me(docs)was that I did have a hormone imbalance, but that was it, and basically to start the Met. I am totally scared of the side effects, and hate taking tablets. I have the usual problems, overweight, excess hair etc etc.
I also find, trying to explain to some family members why I have put on so much weight, and what PCOS is all about, a total minefield, my sisters last statement to me was" Well Posh Spice has it, and she is slim, perhaps you should just cut out bad fatty food" This really makes me cross, and plus also being told that I was born with the condition, doesn't help much
sorry for the rant, just a bad day for me, although it was my 31st Birthday Yesterday!!!
Hi
I totally understand what you're going through!
I was the same before taking gluc, but it isn't that bad. I did have the runs for 2 weeks, but it wasn't all that bad! (just avoid salad for a few weeks!).
As for the A-D's, i'm on prozac, and when i stopped taking them for 3 weeks, i was EVIL!!!! So i'm back on them now!
But you have to carry on taking them, as met/gluc doesn't do anything for depression.
Please start taking the met as they do work. The side effects are ok if you start taking it in a low dosage, then build your way up over a period of 2/3 weeks.
My wife is taking glucophage. Something has evened out her moods (hard to believe it's the gluc, but I think it is). She used to have cyclical depression (really, really low). She's always been a little OCD, but not depressed all the time. She currently takes no ADs.
There is a period of time after starting the glucophage where the body has to adjust -- gastrointestinal disturbances and such.
My wife has lost weight and had more regular periods (though not completely normal) on glucophage.
Over all, I'd say the glucophage is worth the adjustments.
Thanks for all the advice. I have got an nasty ear infection now, so am popping pills like you wouldn't believe, antibiotics, pain killers etc. I will start the met as soon as I get myself clear of the infection, fingers crossed!!!!!

Met can have some pretty yucky side effects ... I've been taking them for three months now and I am now starting to feel 'well' for the first time in as long as I can remember!
Yeah, feeling sick isn't pleasant, running to the loo isn't nice but it does get better! I now have more energy, it looks like I have ovulated for the first time in ages, the boils I was experiencing are hugely improved and I'm getting some energy back! All I can say is try it.
I don't think Met. does anything for depression, so it's definately best to keep taking them.
Good luck to u and keep in touch.

Hiya Ross!,
I am on Met and feel a lot more stable then I have done for years so it's worth trying, even for a short time.
As for explaining things to your family gets some stuff printed from the net and hand it to them. This way they can feel they are helping you find out stuff. This really helped with my overbearing mother who counldn't understand why I couldn't lose weight and was starting to look like Chewbacca on a bad day!!!!
I have had so many people say the posh spice thing to me too!!! I don't know if they think we don't know and that obviously a footballer husband and a lot of money helps to be skinny. I will go down the tesco in the morning to get them!
The best thing to do is also to point out that Lowrey Turner (DIY SOS, Would like to meet), Jules Oliver and Kym Marsh (Hearsay) all have pcos too and none of them are posh spice skinny. At the end of the day, tell your sister that she can state the bledding obvious or she can be supportive and love you for you.
Oh dear gone on too long.
Hope all is well. Hugs

Hi, I too am taking anti-depressants and I have just been started on metformin today by my Consultant. She said to start at 250mg {half a 500mg} tablet and increase by 250mg each week until I am taking 1000mg three times daily. This she says will help reduce the side effects. I know I couldn't do with out the A/D's.
Sorry about the comments from your family, I'm lucky that mine know what I'm going through.
Take care
Sammy
Cheers Sammy. I am off the antidepressants at the moment, and feel ok. I got my load of Metformin from a friend who was prescribed them, and never took them, just as I make the decision to start, they have expired. I will have to go to the GP now, however, he isn't convinced that Metformin are that good, wish me luck!
